    Girls, now and back then.

True Life and Fiction: The Dora Phenomenon

What do you folks think? Demonization of our kids caused by the environment? I'm kind of worried about this, my 6 year old sister cried yesterday because all her friends have a blackberry and are allowed to watch mtv. I'm the only one in the household trying to protect her from all these bad influences( as i perceive it). I want my sister to learn to think before being exposed to all the rubbish, yet I'm not too sure. What do you guys think? Am I overdoing it by disallowing mtv, slutty dolls and a blackberry?

    I dunno, dude.

I'm trying to protect my nephew, personally. Everybody else in my family doesn't seem to give a shit and lets him watch the kinds of things I was banned from until adulthood. It's baffling, since the same people who raised me are raising him in such a different manner...

But kids are exposed to different things now, and there seems to be different expectations. I don't get it at all, but it doesn't make me want to raise a kid myself. I don't know how I would handle having a little girl that the world tries to sexualize when she's barely out of diapers.

You are doing an excellent service to her, I promise you. As much as I wish to admit that the picture is both a depiction of today's boys and girls, I find myself more perplexed with the now ugly development in girls. It is simple to say that "boys are boys" and as distasteful as the expression is, their development has remained relatively the same throughout different eras, etc. I am very particular in how I feel a girl should behave, a woman especially, and that seems to have gone far, far down hill.

I blame bad parenting, but again this is the simple way out.

My 6 year old sister is addicted to TV and can't read. Why the hell would she need a blackberry? The TV addiction drives me nuts. and how my mother allows her to use the word "sexy". Seriously, she's a kid, and needs to learn that "sexy" and "beautiful" have two different meanings.

Makes me think of that show "Toddlers and Tiaras". These girls are sick. They're four, and getting spraytans and eyebrow waxes. Do they even understand what's going on? Let kids be kids and have fun! What kid would honestly think an eyebrow wax is fun?!

Kind of the opposite of "the dark side of feminism."

More like "the dark side of capitalism."

If anything I consider it "the dark side of humanity."

    No, well done.
You're not supposed to be her friend, you're supposed to be her guardian and protector.
She might hate it now but she'll thank you for it when she's older.

    Meh, every generation says that.

but to answer your question, shes all ready been exposed to it. It would be better to talk to her about these things rather than disallow completely. Then shell learn from the wrong sources, have horrible interpretations, and hate you. Children are impressionable. Better you talking to her about it than her friends.
