Some people see the world as dangerous, and some see it as safe. Some see it as just or unjust. Nevertheless, we all live in the same world. Elements of our personality color our views, and human perception is little more than an inkblot test. One purpose of the Enneagram of Personality is to describe the various lenses that distort our perception of the world. If you believe that the world is ultimately more interesting than your inner world, that you must go with the flow, and that the objective of life is to find and maintain peace, then you might be:

    I. Introduction to the Enneagram of Personality

The Enneagram of Personality is a personality classification system comprised of nine types. Each one of these nine types represents a distinct set of motivations, fears, desires and virtues. This article (and the other articles in this series) are ...

An Overview of the Nine (pg 247)

The inner landscape of the Nine resembles someone riding a bicycle on a beautiful day, enjoying everything about the flow of the experience. The whole picture, the entire situation, is what is pleasant and identified with rather than any particular part. The inner world of Nines is this experience of effortless oneness: their sense of self comes from being in union with the other. Naturally, they would like to preserve this quality of oneness with the environment as much as possible.

Their receptive orientation to life gives Nines so much deep satisfaction that they see no reason to question it or to want to change anything essential about it. Because Nines develop psychologically this way, we should not fault them if their view of life is open and optimistic. But we may fault Nines when they refuse to see that life, while sweet, also has its difficulties which must be dealth with. Their refusal to fix the tire when ...

Type nine people care more than most about maintaining a comfortable, undisturbed life. They can become trapped by compulsive avoidance of upsetting circumstances. One of their talents is an intuitive ability to melt into another person's being.

Except in rare cases, people of type nine show a flavoring from one of the two adjacent wing points, so we can say they are nine with an eight wing (9/8) or nine with a one wing (9/1).

Like all humans, nines also come in three instinctual flavors: social (9sc), sexual (9sx), or self-preserving (9sp). In addition, nines also experience nine distinct levels of mental-emotional health (briefly described by the phrases at the top of this page). Therefore, it is possible

    Enneagram Type 9:
Peacemaker, Mediator, Naturalist, Accommodator or Abdicator
You want to be agreeable, peaceful, natural and comfortable. More importantly, you want to be calm and, if at all possible, to avoid conflict. You see yourself as accepting, unassuming and laid-back. You would like others to see you as humble, easygoing and approachable. Your idealized image is that you are content and harmonious.

Desiring union, harmony and unconditional love, you get along with most people that you meet. Considerate and gentle, you have an innate ability to make people feel comfortable and at ease. You are very accepting and readily empathize with others. Focused on the well being of others, you may at times lose sight of your own agenda. More intellectual than you let on, you have a natural gift for seeing many different points of view. You are able to see all the shades of gray in any given situation and have a way of diffusing conflict ...

    • It is worth examining your type's tendency to go along with others, doing what they want to keep the peace and be nice. Will constantly acquiescing to the wishes of others provide the kind of relationships that will really satisfy you? Remember, it is impossible to love others if you are not truly present to them. This means that you have to be yourself, that you (paradoxically) have to be independent so that you can really be there for others when they need you.
    • Exert yourself. Force yourself to pay attention to what is going on. Do not drift off or tune out people, or daydream. Work on focusing your attention to become an active participant in the world around you. Try to become more mentally and emotionally engaged.
    • Recognize that you also have aggressions, anxieties, and other feelings
