    Function Analysis Test

These two tests came up on INTPforum a few days ago, and I found them pretty good. They're not your standard MBTI test, but instead they give you characteristics that pertain to the use of a specific cognitive function and it tries to figure out which ones you use most often. There are two tests...

http://www.cognitiveprocesses.com/as...velop_old.html (Both links broken go here: http://www.keys2cognition.com/explore.htm)
    http://www.cognitiveprocesses.com/as...yOriginal.html

It's cool 'cause you can tell if you rank two functions really closely to each other, which type probably suits you second-best. I lost my results, but the first one had me as an INTP with Fi approx. equal with my Si function (both about 3/5 of Ti and Ne, with Ne a little lower than Ti), and the third one had me as INFP with a Ti/Fi on equal footing, with Ne slightly higher than both.

Pretty cool... cause the INFP description on bestfittype is the definite close 2nd, but the INTP description is almost dead on. All the Ti activities come very naturally, too, but I don't think I started using my Fi until relatively recently (past few years or so).

Anyway, cool tests with a different perspective from normal. Post your results here!

that was a really interesting couple of tests. for the second one, i tested infp, but for the first i got intj. i don't quite understand the results - can you help me interpret them?

although i test all over the IN sphere, intj is the rarest result for me to get.

    Se
You value this process as a helpful aid, even if you do not engage it that often. You trust it contributes to life, particularly when done by others who do the process well. You might recruit others to help you do this process for you.

    Ti,Si,Ne,Fe
You actively use this process in your daily life as a useful tool or helpful aid. You could live without it but use definitely contributes to the what you do and who you are. You can work with others using this process, usually in a support role.

    Fi
You create value, aid others and get things done everyday using this process. You function well here, know all the ins and outs, strengths and limits of this process. You have made this process your own, something personal and unique to you.

    Ni,Te
You sustain and grow yourself and those around you long-term through this process. You are at your best, your peak creative and leadership moments when engaged in this process. This is a lead role; it is who you are and what you truly do.

but here is the result for the second test:

    extraverted Sensing (Se) ********************* (21.1)
    limited use
    introverted Sensing (Si) ******************** (20.1)
    limited use
    extraverted Intuiting (Ne) **************************************** (40.5)
    excellent use
    introverted Intuiting (Ni) ****************************************** (42.6)
    excellent use
    extraverted Thinking (Te) ********************** (22.2)
    limited use
    introverted Thinking (Ti) ****************************** (30.2)
    good use
    extraverted Feeling (Fe) ***************************** (29.5)
    average use
    introverted Feeling (Fi) ********************************** (34.4)
    good use

as you can see, the results are a lot different.

my first question would be ... is it the way i interpret the questions?

i honestly thik that's one of the reasons i don't have a consistent type.

    this question, for example:

    44. Take apart something to figure out the principles on which it works.

if it's referring to ideas, i'm a crack deconstructionist. but with machines, i can't be bothered. reading about them is sufficient.

    anyway, i'd appreciate your insight.

You are generally not aware of engaing in this process. You find it bothersome and unhelpful from others and question its value. You may mistake its use for something else. You may avoid or try to shut down situations that involve this process.

    Se,Fi,Fe
You notice this process and enjoy when others use it but only occassionally find yourself engaging in it. You may marvel at others who do it very well. It doesn't appear useful to you personally and can annoy you if others use it too much.

yep yep. Sorry, no time now... but I'll explain the output of these tests when I get done classes today... or perhaps after my test tonight... I'm not sure when there'll be time, but I'll try my hardest to find some. Tomorrow at the latest
    Happy thanked this post.

ok, so the functions that these things are talking about are psychological functions that everyone uses. The first letter denotes the function (T = Thinking, F = Feeling, N= iNtuition, and S = Sensing), while the second (lower-case) letter shows how the function is oriented (i = introverted, e = extroverted). The higher the numbers you get back, the more often the test thinks that you use the given function with the given orientation. So a very high Ti score, for instance, means that you often think about logical outcomes, what its implications are, and whether it's consistent with itself, because that's what introverted thinking does. You can probably find descriptions of all the functions if you google them.

So then there are these four-letter shorthands, because every type uses each of the four functions (which is why there's a lot of overlap) with different strengths and orientations. Sensing and Intuition are information-gathering, or perceiving, functions, while thinking and feeling are decision-making, or judging ones. It's said that everyone has two dominant functions, one judging and one perceiving, one extroverted and one introverted, and two weaker ones, also one judging one perceiving and one introverted and one extroverted. The middle two of the four letters tell you which pair is dominant. An NT has intuition and thinking in the dominant spot, an NF intuition and feeling, an SF sensing and feeling, and an ST sensing and thinking. They're your two preferred ways to look at the world and make decisions.

Then the I/E in your code just tells whether your "lead" function, the strongest of the four, is introverted or extroverted. The J/P tells which of the dominant two functions, the information gathering or the decision-making one, is extroverted. So an INTP, for example, has intuition and thinking as strong functions, and sensing and feeling as weak ones. The I tells you that the strongest of the four is introverted, and the P means that the perceiving function, intuition, is extroverted. Putting these rules together you can say that an INTP has Ti dominant, Ne secondary.

Then there's some debate about what to do with the other two... but I think the way the most-accepted theory out there works is that the tertiary function, the stronger of the two weak ones, is the opposite of your secondary, and the inferior (weakest) is the opposite of your dominant function. So Fe is the opposite of Ti (both being decision making functions of opposite orientation), and Si is the opposite of Ne (being perceiving functions with opposite orientation), so you get the expected function strengths of an INTP are Ti, Ne, Si, Fe. These same rules apply for any type. Sadly I have no idea what to do with the subconscious functions, cause I haven't read enough and I don't know the theory that well... but a type's unconscious functions are the ones that aren't listed explicitly. So for an INTP the unconscious functions are Te, Ni, Se, and Fi. I don't know anything about their strengths or role in affecting a personality, though.

So the reason you got INTJ, psyche, is because your Fe scored lower than your Te. Both of the INxJ types are Ni dominant, so that was expected, but your higher Te score caused it to type you as an INTJ. The other possibility would have been something like ENTJ, which would have the Te, Ni, Se, Fi function order, which could have been if your Te were just typed a littel bit too weak... but your very high Fi score and very low Se score don't match up with the lower two functions, so it went with the INTJ. There is no Te/Fi strong combination, because they're both decision-making functions, so it wouldn't have any other choice of anything to type you. As for the second test, that's calling you an obvious INxJ (if you're sure you're not extroverted), with a shade closer to F than T. It's tough to tell cause your Nx's are so close, you can't really tell which is the conscious and unconscious clearly--probably due to, like you said, misunderstanding a question's intentions. That's a good part of the reason why I actually wanted to learn the theory rather than just going by the little cheap internet tests, because I think my own judgments based directly on the theory are better than my understanding of questions related to another person's judgments of the theory. If the Ne was conscious and the Ni subconscious, then you're probably an ENFP, but if the Ni conscious and the Ne subconscious, then you're probably an INFJ by that one.

Anything else I can try to answer, or can everyone else figure it out from those examples?
Happy, psyche's release, Inky and 3 others thanked this post.

    Your Developmental Curve
This model attempts to graph a 'developmental curve'. Theoretically, people should choose simpler, less sophisticated aspects of the cognitive processes more often than they choose complex, more sophisticated aspects. The simpler aspects of each process are necessary to perform the more sophisticated aspects! However, because the phrases are in development, this measure has questionable validity.

    Your self-assessment curve = 1.9

-- A curve less than 0 indicates you checked simpler phrases more often than sophisticated ones. This is expected, although a particularly low number (more than -10) might happen if the phrases were particularly unclear to you, or if you under-estimated your abilities.

-- A curve greater than 0 indicates you checked sophisticed phrases more often than simpler ones. This would be counter to a developmental model and might happen if many phrases are badly written or if you have over-estimated your capabilities.

    Your Most-Used Processes
Based on your response, these are your top three cognitive processes in use:

Fi : Evaluating; considering importance and worth; reviewing for incongruity; evaluating something based on the truths on which it is based; clarifying values to achieve accord; deciding if something is of significance and worth standing up for.

Fe : Connecting; considering others and the group—organizing to meet their needs and honor their values and feelings; maintaining societal, organizational, or group values; adjusting and accommodating others; deciding if something is appropriate or acceptable to others.

Te : Ordering, segmenting; organizing for efficiency; systematizing; applying logic; structuring; checking for consequences; monitoring for standards or specifications being met; setting boundaries, guidelines, and parameters; deciding if something is working or not.

    Your Developmental Report
Your pattern of responses indicates a developmental level in each cognitive processes. Since this is experimental, this report may be in error.

    Ti
You notice this process and enjoy when others use it but only occassionally find yourself engaging in it. You may marvel at others who do it very well. It doesn't appear useful to you personally and can annoy you if others use it too much.

    Ni,Si,Se
You value this process as a helpful aid, even if you do not engage it that often. You trust it contributes to life, particularly when done by others who do the process well. You might recruit others to help you do this process for you.

    Te,Ne
You actively use this process in your daily life as a useful tool or helpful aid. You could live without it but use definitely contributes to the what you do and who you are. You can work with others using this process, usually in a support role.

    Summary Analysis of Profile
By focusing on the strongest configuration of cognitive processes, your pattern of responses most closely matches individuals of this type: INFJ

    Lead (Dominant) Process
Introverted Intuiting (Ni): Transforming with a meta-perspective. Withdrawing from the world and focusing your mind to receive an insight or realization. Checking if synergy results. Trying out a realization to transform things.

    Support (Auxilliary) Process
Extraverted Feeling (Fe): Building trust through giving relationships. Empathically responding to others' needs and take on their needs and values as your own. Checking for respect and trust. Giving and receiving support to grow closer to people.

If these cognitive processes don't fit well then consider these types: ENFJ, or ISFJ

If these results are different from what you know of yourself, you might consider why your developmental pattern does not align with your expectation. You might also consider exploring this result as a possible better fit.

    The Four Temperaments
Corresponding best-fit temperaments based on your profile: Catalyst; secondly Stabilizer; then Theorist; and lastly, Improviser.
