Do you play video games? Why?
Yes. Humans derive dopamine from a sense of achievement and winning. I do quite a substantial amount of winning. More dopamine for me.

Are video games the 8th art? Why?
I wasn't aware that there were 7 commonly known arts in the first place, nor do I care to classify what is and isn't art.

    What is your favorite one?
Team Fortress 2. I like League of Legends too.

I like games that allow me to exploit my superior tactics and strategy that I have developed from a thorough understanding of the game's framework through Ti. With that understanding, I can analyze and identify what works and what doesn't work. Ne also allows me to be very predictive as to what the other player will do. I'm also very capable of learning from my mistakes through Si. I do not often make the same mistake more than once, and thus become a better player day by day. I enjoy games where you are encouraged to use teamwork, even though a shitty team can often drag me down.

    Least favorite?
I don't make a habit of playing shitty games, but I'd say out of the ones I've played, "Forsaken World" is up there. Tried it because it was free-to-play on Steam. They'd have to pay me to play it.

Mostly in the past. Now I really don't play any PC games unless you count Axis & Allies, a board game someone made a PC engine for. They were/are a creative outlet for NT's, and we find fulfillment in problem solving.

    Genres I've played:
    - FPS: Half-Life, Counter-Strike, CS Source, Team Fortress 2
    - RTS: Warcraft, Warcraft II, Age of Empires II, Starcraft
    - RTT (tactics): Warcraft III (mostly DotA), Warhammer 40k
    - RPG: AnotherWorld (a text based MUD), Diablo, Diablo II, Baldur's Gate, NeverWinter Nights (server called Lala Land), Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim
    - TBS: Empire: Wargame of the Century (1987), Ultimate Domain (1993), Sid Meire's Alpha Centauri (1999), Most Civilizations, an old game called Civil War General...

I have pretty much eradicated all adrenaline-based video games from my life at this point as they are highly distracting, time-consuming and counter productive. I have played chess on and off the last few years, but ultimately the only game that continually caters to my Ti Ne's need for grand strategy is Axis & Allies.

So yah, that "Wargame of the Century"...

    2. Are video games the 8th art? Why?

    2. What is your favorite one?

    1. Of course. It's fun. Is an expansion on reality. Dreaming awake. More worlds to be experienced. And the redemption factor of "load last save".

    2. They could be but would be a stretch. My concern is whether they are entitled to such a term being mostly the incorporation of other arts.

    3. The Elder Scrolls 3 (Morrowind), Resident Evil 1, 2, 3 (not the rest).
In general my fav genre is action/adventure RPGs followed by Strategy. I also have a distinct liking for survival horror games.

Notable mention: games that could be taught in classes as their level of real life information was outstanding. Like metal Gear Solid:
The storyline explores many social, philosophical and cyberpunk themes in great detail, including meme theory, social engineering, sociology, artificial intelligence, information control, conspiracy theories, political and military maneuvering, evolution, existentialism, censorship, the manipulation of free will, the nature of reality,[4][8][10][111][112][113] child exploitation,[114] and taboos such as incest[115] and sexual orientation.
    Mindgasm ^
And the F going berserk factor (based on real happenings):
Sniper Wolf - The Metal Gear Wiki
"I was born on a battlefield. Raised on a battlefield. Gunfire, sirens and screams... They were my lullabies..."
    4. CoD and its likes hands down. Designed particularly for underdeveloped, undereducated, males. Requires the least brain capacity to be played and its ethics are disturbing. Young children learn from games and I don't like what CoD is teaching them...
Hardly a game to provide me a challenge. When I need to flat out my brain activity, I load some construction game instead. Patterns <3

I have played arcade games, even owned an original atari. Enjoy immensely, browser based multiplayer wargames and I excel in them mostly because of my personality.

I find it disturbing games have been dumbed down significantly since ~ 2005 with the exception of Minecraft. Is a sign of the times. The actual gaming community is now older as the brand new gen (along with idling old people that weren't gamers in previous decades), moved to multiplayer/socializing games. WoW is the middle ground between older generations and the newbies but is growing old too.
It is indicative we are getting so many re-releases - notable example: Myst.

I believe many have felt the void of games that immerse the player seeing by how many developers struggle to publish pc...card games in the last 3 years. Which is too geeky even for me.

Legendary games happened in the past and I can't wait to see them revived, producing completely new games though instead of remakes. Innovation and depth; is what games lack today imo.

    I agree with him.

Agree 100% we should be living in the golden age of games now that we are not handcuffed by graphical limitations, but instead we are handcuffed by greed and mediocrity.

Why do you play League of Legends then?

Jokes aside League of Legends is an interesting game with a lot of complex strategizing and teamwork. We need more games that do not underestimate the players intelligence.
Revenant, kingdavidANC and TheBoss thanked this post.

Do you play video games? Why?
I play them. I'll go through stages of heavy obsessive play and no play what-so-ever. Average probably 7 hours/week over my lifetime. I like the competitiveness of them so 80% of my gaming is done against other humans. I think it trains my hand-eye coordination and strategic mind. It's also a proactive leisure activity whereas most things people would otherwise be doing (reading/watching), or passive.

Are video games the 8th art? Why?
Video games are the most sophisticated form of art there is. They incorporate story, graphics, music... and have a challenge/problem solving factor to them that you need to appreciate accurately in order to gain access to the rest of the art. They are also very useful learning tools.

    What is your favorite one?
    My favorites are:
Strategy: Starcraft 2 b/c it is highly strategic and balanced w/ strong diversity as well
FPS: Planetside (looking forward to Planetside 2, pm me if you're looking for an outfit) b/c it has a large variety of weapons/vehicles, teamword/advanced objectives, massive battles, and persistence that makes it seem more worthwhile.
MMO: Ultima Online b/c it had a very intelligent community and was a very successful "sand-box" with a functioning economy where players could do whatever they wanted and never get bored.

    Least favorite?
I don't dwell on crappy games. I guess I'll go with most overrated: World of Warcraft. So much time wasted spent "farming" and the graphics are shit in MHO.

Recommendations, music, anecdotes and concept art are welcome.
Planetside 2!! PlanetSide 2 PC Game - Massive Combat on an Epic Scale

Praise the sun! I was starting to think I was the only one who seriously considered this.

    An MMOFPS? Might be interesting...
I will add it to my list.

eh, duh? lol. Strategy games are an NT domain. Video games are some of the most strategic games out there.

    What is your favorite one?
Most of the video games I've played I've enjoyed.

    • Civilization 1-5 are all classic games that have consumed way too much of my time. A good world domination strategy game.
    • Combat Flight Sims which allow planning around tough obstacles.
    • Modern Warfare/Call of Duty/Other Misc FPS-Ditto above. Survival mode in MW2 is my current favorite. It gives you the real ability to set up your defensive environment and manage your combat strategy in a time crunch.
    • Madden NFL-Mix of Football and Football strategy. Lately, I've had more interested in running the team (draft, FAs, etcs) than playing the games.

    Least favorite?

    • Open ended games: SimCity, "the Sims"-Never played it but it fits in this category I don't like. Games without winning conditions: MS Flight Simulator, etc.
    • Games that require timed repetitions or memorization: Mario Brothers (left, left, jump, run.) or Zoombies in COD:Black Ops.

    yes ..lots

video games are not so much art as they are design pieces ..one could argue there is no such thing as art

but one could argue there is no such thing as anything
