Sure you can, if you think in terms of negative space.

To me personally, the glass is half-full if I'm puring water into it. It is half-empty if I am drinking from it, since I am in the course of emptynig it.

The glass is...well, I'm just going to drink it because I am really thirsty right now. So...if there's water in it, it's half full, if it's wine (red wine I hope ), it's half empty. Ok, ok, seriously now, it's half full, I hate my optimism sometimes, it makes me do stupid things, but I really can't escape it.

To me this have allways been quite obvious:
It's half empty if the glass was originally full and half the content poured out.
It's half full if the glass was originally empty and have been filled to the half of it's potential capacity.

The glass is just a figment of our imaginations, any liquid in it whether half full or half empty is......ok, I've got nothing
