The following is based off of wikipedia so validity is probably not 100%. Also, it only accounts for U.S., don't know if there is a world statistic somewhere.

The Sixteen Types US Population Breakdown The table organizing the sixteen types was created by Isabel Myers (an INFP).

    ISTJ 1114%
    ISFJ 914%
    INFJ 13%
    INTJ 24%
    ISTP 46%
    ISFP 59%
    INFP 45%
    INTP 35%
    ESTP 45%
    ESFP 49%
    ENFP 68%
    ENTP 25%
    ESTJ 812%
    ESFJ 913%
    ENFJ 25%
    ENTJ 25%

It also bears mentioning that certain types are more common for certain genders. For example, ISTJs are more commonly males than females, and INFPs are the other way around.

    ESTP: 10%
    ISTJ: 8.5%
    ISFJ: 7%
    ENFP: 7%
    ISTP: 6%
    ISFP: 6%
    ENTP: 4.5%
    ENFJ: 4%
    ENTJ: 4%
    INTP: 2.5%
    INFP: 2%
    INTJ: 1.5%
    INFJ: 1%

    They are estimates, though. :)

I don't agree with a lot of the estimates. I've noticed ENTJ's being a very rare personality type, something I haven't seen reflected in any official statistics.

I had it floating around my Ni that INTJ was the rarest, but it wasn't information from a study but 2nd hand from a teacher delivering an mbti. His judgement looks approximate to personality.info, ENTJ was about 3rd last in his eye.
The irony is that INTJ is such a popular temperment here :)

Well, apparently the introverted types are more likely to use the forums all day.

    Here and only here.

Popularity as in both 'common' and 'liked'.

I've read in most places that ENFJ males are rarer than ENFJ females at around 1%-2% max .... Just as INFJ males are rarer than INFJ females.

And finally, I think the rarest type may well be an ENTJ female ---- perhaps not naturally so though. Nurture may have a lot to do with development of cognitive functions for ENTJ women and NT women in general. Just as it negatively impacts the develop of NF males.

The emotional man is just as much a taboo in society as the emotionless woman.

Why people can't be left to develop naturally without negative socialization and forced to adhere to stereotypical views of genders is beyond me. It would cause a lot less heartache.
