    Personality Types and Dabrowski's Overexcitabilities

    Okay, before I start I would just like to state that I am an expert on neither MBTI typing, nor Dabrowski's Overexcitabilites, so I apologise for any mistakes I may have made.

    Here is a brief list of traits associated with each of the overexcitabilities copied from Dabrowski - Dabrowski's Overexcitabilities in Gifted Children:

    Psychomotor:

    * Rapid speech
    * Impulsive behavior
    * Competitiveness
    * Compulsive talking
    * Compulsive organizing
    * Nervous habits and tics
    * Preference for fast action and sports
    * Physical expression of emotions
    * Sleeplessness

    Sensual

    * Appreciation of beauty, whether in writing, music, art or nature. Includes love of objects like jewelry
    * Sensitive to smells, tastes, or textures of foods
    * Sensitivity to pollution
    * Tactile sensitivity (Bothered by feel of some materials on the skin, clothing tags)
    * Craving for pleasure
    * Need or desire for comfort

    Intellectual

    * Deep curiosity
    * Love of knowledge and learning
    * Love of problem solving
    * Avid reading
    * Asking of probing questions
    * Theoretical thinking
    * Analytical thinking
    * Independent thinking
    * Concentration, ability to maintain intellectual effort

    Imaginational

    * Vivid dreams
    * Fear of the unknown
    * Good sense of humor
    * Magical thinking
    * Love of poetry, music and drama
    * Love of fantasy
    * Daydreaming
    * Imaginary friends
    * Detailed visualization

    Emotional

    * Extremes of emotion
    * Anxiety
    * Feelings of guilt and sense of responsibility
    * Feelings of inadequacy and inferiority
    * Timidity and shyness
    * Loneliness
    * Concern for others
    * Heightened sense right and wrong, of injustice and hypocrisy
    * Strong memory for feelings
    * Problems adjusting to change
    * Depression
    * Need for security
    * Physical response to emotions (stomach aches caused by anxiety, for example)

    Well, my question was, do you think there could be a correlation between the sort of overexcitabilites someone may have and their personality type?

    For example, could an emotional overexcitability be more commonly/only found in feelers, whereas an intellectual overexcitability predominantly found in Ns/Ts.

    Any thoughts/contributions are greatly appreciated!

    Thank you,
    Clog

    Not sure. I think I had all of those except the psychomotor, but the categories definitely seem like they could be type-related in others.

    INTJ - The Scientists

    If one were to go by statistics (which may or may not be a good call) the majority of the gifted population is INXX followed by ENXP. I'm an IN of sorts (I think) and exhibited (and still do) signs of emotional and imaginational OE most frequently. I think there is something there. Maybe these OE episodes shape the potential of their victims so profoundly it carves their personality.

    I think they could correlate to specific functions...

    Psychomotor-Se+Te. (XNTJ/XSFP?)
    Sensual-Se.
    Intellectual-Ne, Ti, maybe Ni.
    Imaginational-Ni, Ne.
    Emotional-Fi, maybe Fe.

    Thank you for your replies -- just to add my tuppence (couldn't do it earlier because I was running out of time),

    I am INTx (probably INTP, but yet to decide) and I think I have both the emotional and intellectual OEs. Strange, as emotional would probably be something you might attribute to Fi or Fe, which are obviously not my strongest functions -- what do you guys think?

    Well, one thing that I've noticed is that because Thinkers have no really prioritized their Feeling sides, it's often not very refined or moderated, so they may well experience emotional extremes, difficulty managing their emotional lives, etc. Frankly, I see a lot of NTs as highly ethical-emotional people, who push rationality to the front of their priorities.

    I'm not sure, though I could fit those pretty well when I was a kid.

    Every time I've read lists of traits for 'gifted children', they've struck me as more ExxP-ish than anything.

    ENTP - The Visionaries

    I think type might have to do with which parts of each of these they correspond with, for example, I will bold those that are in correlation with me

    Psychomotor:

    * Rapid speech
    * Impulsive behavior
    * Competitiveness
    * Compulsive talking
    * Compulsive organizing
    * Nervous habits and tics
    * Preference for fast action and sports

    * Craving for pleasure
    * Need or desire for comfort

    Intellectual

    * Deep curiosity
    * Love of knowledge and learning

    * Love of problem solving
    * Avid reading
    * Asking of probing questions
    * Theoretical thinking

    * Analytical thinking
    * Independent thinking
    * Concentration, ability to maintain intellectual effort

    Imaginational

    * Vivid dreams
    * Fear of the unknown
    * Good sense of humor
    * Magical thinking
    * Love of poetry, music and drama
    * Love of fantasy
    * Daydreaming

    * Imaginary friends
    * Detailed visualization

    Emotional

    * Extremes of emotion
    * Anxiety
    * Feelings of guilt and sense of responsibility
    * Feelings of inadequacy and inferiority
    * Timidity and shyness
    * Loneliness
    * Concern for others
    * Heightened sense right and wrong, of injustice and hypocrisy
    * Strong memory for feelings
    * Problems adjusting to change
    * Depression
    * Need for security
    * Physical response to emotions (stomach aches caused by anxiety, for example)

    I'm an ENTP, and as far as I know, we love the whole learning thing, love to talk, and have bouncing thoughts all the time, and love to defy regular thought, we also have a great radar for BS. I think my answers are in congruence with this.

    As you can see, for me its primarily intellectual, followed by emotional.
