    MBTI vs MMPI

For you Psych and smart people out there: What's the difference? The world of psychology claims that MMPI is the best, but of course WE know better! But do they even measure the same thing? And why is any info on the MMPI so hush-hush? I am simply curious if anyone has taken it, or knows anything about the MMPI, and how/if it relates at all to the MBTI. I think I already know the answer, but I wanna know what you all think. Actually, any information on the MMPI would be useful.

It's a conspiracy. The government knows that MMPI is better but MBTI is more commonly used and the government just can't have something new/unknown becoming well known.

Never heard of it. I am intrigued.

Aren't they kind of, two completely different tests? Like, they don't really compare to each other at all, really? The MMPI seems to be some kind of clinical test for psychological disorders, whilst the MBTI test is a personality test...

    Am I missing something? lol.

Edit: I mean, I just don't know how you can say one is better than the other if they aren't really that a like, but maybe I'm just missing the big picture here or something.

    Thanks for that *insightful* view

Yeah, its the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. There are three versions: original was made in 1945, the revised version in 1989 and the adolescent version was also made (dunno when).

Apparently it has a good amount to do with abnormal psychology/psychological disorders and what not. I was curious if anyone had ever taken it/ knows anything about it/ or knows if it actually assesses personality behaviors, thoughts and tendencies, too.

    That's all.

EDIT: Yeah, I guess "better" is the wrong term. The MMPI is for clinicians. but in this textbook of mine, it says its the "most widely used personality test for clinicians"... course, this is a book on abnormal psych.

Still, I was curious if there was any personality value.

You're welcome, just making sure people know what their government is up to.

There probably is some personality value into it... Whether they know about it (Or acknowledge that, is a better phrase) or not. I mean, especially with the social and impulse type of stuff. Different types of personality are going to score higher or lower on those sorts of things and it could have to do a bit with their personality type, but other than that I have no idea. -shrugs- And I could even be wrong about that.

I've never even heard of the latter. I just looked it up, but I don't really see how they compare to each other, like So Long So Long said.

Aight. Guess that's the end of that.

The MBTI is a not a pathological test. It is used to measure surface functions and preferences, while the MMPI is a pathological test used for diagnosis and treatment thereof. They're both personality tests, but just for different purposes.
