Birthdays are the only thing I celebrate voluntarily. Fuck holidays.
I will bake nearly anyone a cake, though, if it's their birthday.
And I use my own birthday as an excuse to relax and not do shit one day or weekend of the year.
Birthdays are pointless to me. I wish people forget. Don't need to be reminded that I am one year closer to gray hair, high blood pressure, soiled diapers, and death. Plus it creates more pressure to have xyz done by age XX.
In an overarching sense, yes. At an individual sense, also yes. I'm not so much against celebration of life, it's the commercialism that bothers me. My grandparents/parents always ask "what do you want for your birthday/Christmas" and I usually never know. I have plenty of stuff already, thank you. I don't like receiving gifts in general, unless I expect them and they have a good utility. It's like all the depression of shopping without any of the fun searching/looking at interesting stuff.
I always forget my birthday too, and everyone else's except for my kids.
I agree it's just a reminder that I'm closer to death. And I don't want presents. And I hate everyone else expecting you to remember and congratulate them on their birthdays after they are past the age of 21.
I could see why you would think it's pointless if you don't have anyone to celebrate it with, but I've never been in that situation.
That is an excellent point, now here is my rebuttal. Cake.
I dislike when people celebrate my birthday every goddamn year, after I've been saying I hate it for years. I just want to be left alone.
