I was wondering if anyone ever saw/heard of/read about a character and then said to themselves, "Hey, that's an ISTP." or something to that extent. Feel free to explain why, or just list them here and leave us to draw our own conclusions.

Who first came to mind for me was Sherlock Holmes, who I think is a combination ISTP/INTP, but I'd say he leans more towards the ISTP side. He's obviously introverted, as he keeps to himself most of the time unless faced with a client. He's perfectly fine with entertaining himself with thoughts, figuring out how things work, inventions and whatnot, which reminds me of the mechanical side of the ISTP. He's a logical thinker and has a hard time getting in touch with his feeling side, sometimes appearing cold to others and having a hard time with emotions (I recall in the BBC show many times where he got suddenly angry straight from his super-calm persona unexpectedly, even though he tries to keep a calm, keen mind.) His P side is reflected through his messy room and unconventional ways of thinking/doing things (sneaking into someone's house to look for clues). As for sensing, I think he leans more towards S because he points out very small details and can collect many different facts...but his N side puts them all together to see the big picture and make theories.

Actually, this board here supports Holmes being an ISTP quite well: http://personalitycafe.com/istp-forum-mechanics/10085-istp-practical-analyst.html

Linus is INTP. Can you picture an ISTP with a security blanket?

And ... if you ever tell an ISTP that he needs a security blanket, well, you'd better be one hell of a sprinter....

Remo Williams, perhaps?
Yes, definitely! I've read those books since I was twelve years old! (And Chiun is an ENFJ.)

I noticed that most of the ISTPs mentioned here are males. Can anyone name any female ISTPs?
Oh, I'm pretty sure everyone knows her name:

Zarocks, I think ISTPs are "The Most Interesting Men in the World," and I don't care who knows it!

I love this character! If he isn't an ISTP, I don't what is. Content in his isolation, flexible and quick to respond, quick in action, fixes things that need fixing, always doing something, is practical, especially with 'feelers', respectful of other's beliefs, impulsive when pressured, unexpected sense of humor, beautiful physically, a man of few words, and after he and his indian woman get busy, he notices her face is red from his beard, so he shaves it off, anticpating future trysts. I don't know if that last point proves anything, but I love that part of the movie! ISTPilicious.

Bear Claw Chris Lapp: You've come far pilgrim.
Jeremiah Johnson: Feels like far.
Bear Claw Chris Lapp: Were it worth the trouble?
Jeremiah Johnson: What trouble?

[after laboriously teaching Swan one word of English, Jeremiah points to himself]
Jeremiah Johnson: Great hunter. Yes?
Swan: Yes.
Jeremiah Johnson: [points to himself again] Fine figure of a man. Yes?
Swan: Yes.
Jeremiah Johnson: Good. That is all you need to know. For now.
