Follow the Yellow Brick Road! ISTJs and directions.

I was wondering about the ISTJ sense of direction.

My dad is an ISTJ and he has a wicked amazing sense of direction. He can visit a place once and forever know how to get back or figure out how to get there from a description of its surroundings. It blows my mind because I am absolutely rubbish with directions.

So, I'm wondering if any other ISTJs are insanely good with directions. Is it something that you've always been good at or something that you had to work on.

    Thank you in advance.

<< really bad at cardinal directions, but really really good at navigating to any place visited once. Is this an ISTJ thing?? I wasn't aware of it.

If I've been there before I can get there again, at least, most of the time, but when it comes to other directions I suck the big one. I can't give directions either, I'm just total shite at it.

I am not that amazing that I can go somewhere once and forever remember how to get there. If I happen to take a wrong turn on the way to someplace, I will never get lost getting there again, however. Also I am really, really good at navigating my way to major/familiar roads when I get lost in a new place. I will totally just follow my gut about what direction I'm supposed to be going and where I think I went wrong (eg, if I went left/east instead of right/west). 75% of the time I am actually right! I always feel so smart Plus if I've been somewhere and then study its relation to things on a map, or vice versa, it is cemented in my mind. I will virtually never get lost there. I also don't understand people who get lost when they've been given directions/GPS. If I deviate from the directions, it's not often hard to get back on track...

I only developed this fine sense of direction after I started driving, though. When I was a kid my sense of direction wasn't that great. I find that the more I pay attention when I am somewhere new, the more accurate my memory. Obviously the more you go somewhere, the more likely you will remember it. However if I don't think a location is relevant to my life (either directly or because of a friend/family member), I will quickly forget about it :-/ That's probably more than you really wanted to know though

TL;DR - Yes, for the most part. But I'm not super-human amazing at it either.

I have a terrible sense of direction, but I don't get lost because I use Mapquest, and I have a Thomas Brothers map book in my car at all times.

If I have had to get to a place by my own then I would remember, but I would not be able to explain it to others.

I've always been fairly good with directions, once I've visited a place. However, if it has been a while and new construction has changed the landscape, that would throw me. Otherwise, if I've been there before, I can probably drive there again today.

Now that I'm older, I have a great sense of map direction and am almost never without knowledge of the four points of the compass. It is so rare for me to lose that sense of direction that both times it occurred really stand out in my mind.

When giving/receiving directions, I dislike use of "left" or "right" and much prefer "turn north on Main Street". Tom Tom Fail. :(

That said, I am addicted to the convenience of technology. I like being able to enter an address or longitude and latitude into my phone and clicking "get directions." I guess I enjoy a forty-something sounding computer generated female voice whispering directing in my ear. :P

For a girl, I have a shockingly good sense of direction and good map reading abilities.

But when it comes to giving other people directions, that's a completely different story... xP

Hahaha... no. Spatial intelligence is by far my weakest, and any time in a book the words "North, South, East, West" and "Right, left" are mentioned, I mentally groan "Oh no...". It makes it very hard to enjoy war sequences.

If I have to apply it to real life it's even worse... you can at least go back and reread a book without people going "Your other left, stupid."
niss, Sela, Julia Bell and 2 others thanked this post.
