This. I don't normally expect thanks from people anymore, but a common courtesy "thank you" or "please" really brightens up my day at work.

LOL, I've had enough positivity out of people that I work with to push for a raise for me, which is probably the best compliment that could ever come outside of materials.
Who doesn't like money as a method of saying thanks. I would happilly swap all my 'thank you' for money. Sadly, most people would much rather express their thanks verbally which is costless then actually give some kind of materialistic gift to us....

Meh. Money is awkward and complicates things. People feel like they've settled a debt by paying you.

Let me put it this way:

I will work my fingers to the bone, giving until it hurts, and then give a little more, if I feel appreciated. However, if I feel unappreciated, you don't have enough money to get me to give you more than a passing glance.

but after so many thanks it would be nice if they had something to contribute past that. I try to find positions where I get money based off performance rather than goodwill of others.

ya, at what point does that translate into more money? you have to shmooze a lot of people before it makes a difference, and thats against my authenticity principle to go that far.

ya, do things to the point to where they're justifiably right, that damned conscience has to getting in the way.
