    Whistle blowing?

Forgive me if this has been covered here before, I'm new!

Today my supervisor asked me to be involved in a lie He did not want to run a job on a certain machine and wanted to tell all involved that it wouldn't -- without even trying! I also know he will spell it out to the owners that it was my incompetence (I usually run that machine and one lie usually gets backed up with another) that we had to send the job out.

What to do . . . I will not lie for him and this is against rules!!!!

How would other ISTJ's handle this? How do you feel about whistle blowing in general?

I think whistle blowing is hard for ISxJ's, because we don't like to go against authority and we like things to run smoothly. But I definitely think you should in this case. You obviously don't agree with what he's doing and think it's wrong. Worse, he's taking advantage of you, and that's something that happens to ISxJ's a lot.

So even though it may be tough, I think it'll be better for you in the long run if you let someone know about it. Maybe that's what it would take for this guy to stop taking advantage of you, especially because he's the one in the wrong!

Nope, not hard for us to deviate from broken rules. My action would be to let the truth come out. Justice will set things straight due to the truth. Your taking a risk for him, and hes not a very good person. Hopefully you don't have to suffer for this guys actions, if he doesn't get fired.

Generally whistle blowing is put in a negative light, but its the only way of getting things fixed sometimes, as people simply don't know or care until it comes to light one way or another.

You said you won't lie for him...then it's game over. Just be up front with him that you will not be lying to cover anyone.

Whistle blowing? It depends on the motivation.

I agree niss. I won't do it, end of story. He's a very unscrupulous person and sooner or later, it's going to catch up with him.

I would say flat out make it clear to him you're not going to lie. Period. If he's the type to do something like this it's probably not too far out of the norm for him and others have likely picked up on it. They may have even been approached by him for similar reasons, unknowingly lying or not, who knows? Because of this others will probably figure out what's going on when you're not going along with him and you won't ever have to be a "tattle tale" or anything like that. But certainly go with your own convictions. If you feel strongly there is someone you should outright tell, then by all means, go for it. This is always a sticky situation, sorry you have to deal with someone else's issues like this. Good luck with it all.

I agree. Don't lie for him. However, you mentioned that he's not trustworthy to begin with ... my concern is that if you tell him you're going to "out" him, he may try to do "advance damage control". In other words, he may try to beat you to the punch to cover his own rear end, and make you look like the bad guy that's crazy/lying. Just take the information (the truth) to the higher-ups. Normally I do not condone jumping the chain of command but in this particular case I believe that it's warranted.

Yes, he plays the game well and has probably taken those steps already. Unfortunately, for me, the higher ups will listen to the person sitting in front of them first. They have never came and check out the story -- especially from a manager. ** Sigh **

If you can, have a quiet word with your supervisors manager, without your supervisor knowing. He will get reprimanded for breaking the rules and as he has told others (those involved) he will not be sure who spoke to the manager.

In my last job, rules were rules and breaking them potentially could lead to the FDA closing a production site down or a fine of millions of £ /$. Rules are there for a reason and are set by management to enable them to control business activities. Therefore, management need to know if someone is deliberately breaking these rules.
