    Personality Metamorphoses

Just a not-so-simple question probably answered before but I would like to see your ideas about it.

Do you think that personalities can go through metamorphoses, as in; change from one personality type to another due to external or internal influences? I was just thinking that my personality type was probably not the same since I was a kid as it is now and I must have been through specific events and ideas or phases that have turned me into the person I am now. Do you think that if these metamorphoses do exist they can reoccur or will they stop happening after a certain amount of time/age, and how long would they take? I wonder how many of these phases would be the most that can be experienced by an individual. I am sure there will be subtle changes but will there be a notable change in one's behaviour. How can these changes be observed by the person themselves, if at all? And lastly can someone be "guided" into a personality type from birth?

Sorry about all the questions: it's just my thought process.

Enviroment definitely plays a role in personality type, some monozygous twins have differing personalities. I think we all evolve personality wise through our lifetime, I used to be more J when younger now I can't find 2 shits to give.

I was scared that I was being singled out somehow in a thread

But, no... just about evolution and change or personalities...

About this though, my dad is a very interesting person to type. I can't tell sometimes if he is an ISTJ or and ISTP. He went to a military academy and probably had the go with the flow attitude, but once he had those strict environmental experiences to develop, his self-control grew, and thus J began to mature and take over his dominant side. He writes lists now and wants to constantly know what the plan is, and is very uncomfortable if he doesn't. It was just something that was instilled in him.

Alcohol seems to put a temporary metamorphoses on our psychs too.

I think that it really depends on your environment. Sometimes you may not be using the functions that are natural to you in order to cope with your environment.

Surrounding yourself with like-minded people that you admire, trust and are easy to talk to, surrounding yourself by things you respond well to, and that you are doing that which you want to be doing, carrying you in the direction you are pursuing, will help you to actualize your potential, whatever that may be.

On the other hand, perhaps this system of compartmentalizing people is a bit of a sham. I mean, I think we can all agree that it's not an exact science. More like a guideline.

One thing's for sure though: It's helped me at least to understand a bit more about my cognition on an abstract level.

Absolutely, I think people are kidding themselves when they try to find "consistency" in others personalities. Sometimes I am altruistic and caring; other times I am overwhelmingly cynical. It depends on my environment.

What @kikikins said. Kinda. Our behaviour can change, but not your personality. I was, am and will always be an introvert who hates people, but depending on my environment I can be a cynical, pessimistic, nihilistic, iconoclastic asshole, or I can be graceful and polite and actually tolerate people's company.

But remember, this is my opinion, and opinions are like assholes...

I'm speaking from experience when I say that certain chemicals can permanently alter one's personality.

I agree that chemicals can permanently change you. However I do not think environment can. Unless it is something extremely traumatizing.

I am sure one's environment does play a part. When I say environment, I include what your parents and teachers have taught you, your friends, your interactions with various people, the religion you were born into, social and cultural norms, etc.
