It's like two black holes sucking each other in. I saw a video of Neil Degrasse Tyson answering just this in a Q&A session, but the video is like an hour long and I don't remember exactly which one it is.

    Off to Youtube!

Edit: I think the video was called Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist. IDK, my BFF Jill.

You can't rotate portals, problem solved.

Am I allowed to think of those portals as black holes rotating towards/around each other? If so:

Or is this some theoretical conundrum that can't be answered with modern means? If so, I will be highly disappointed.

Edit: You were right. I'm enjoying myself immesely. I should get a life.

Yo dawg so we herd you like portals so we put a portal in yo portal so you can portal through portals while you portal through portals, dawg.

will it spit out the inserted portal? or will the inserted portal end up swallowing up the parent portal from within?

all this talk about spirals and portals and blackholes- time for some lasag- er gridwars!

So I have been thinking about this for about 45 so far and I think I came to a conclusion. While playing portal 2 I made two portals directly vertical from eachother. I jumped down it and kept going through both portals for a while till I hit the corner. So then I imagined, if I was to attach the portals to eachother, both still vertical but merged, the distance I would travel through would be nonexistent. So I thought maybe, it would then make the distance I travel through a new universe of it's own, which is nothing but repeated traveling of time and space. Falling for ever, making the distance nothing but time and space of extremely rapid contuation and decontinuation.

So if I take your idea of flipping one and inserting it into the other and using the concept I have just thought of, I would assume it would be the same effect. The cause would be the same, maybe the geometery of the new universe could be different, but same rapid expansion of continuation and decontinuation. This is what I have concluded and is a theory I am now going to let plague my mind all day and for a while till I am satisfied.
