    Rambling while speaking

While I've noticed the clarity amongst the posts of most INTP's within this forum, and although I am aware of my new status towards this forum, I have wondered do many of y'all hold the issue of rambling and continuing to go off on a separate and almost unrecognizable tangent once conversation with another person starts?

If so, does this tangent typically hold the same passion as the actual topic, as if you mind believes you are still talking about the same subject at hand?

I always seem to have this problem once someone opens my mind into a topic of grand interest and fascination to me or one that I have a passionate viewpoint of.

I'm not scatterbrained, you just need to know all the information associated to the topic to understand it fully!
And all the information associated to the associations.
    Annnnnd all the information there.
Y'know, I bet there' probably a study of this kind of information behaviour.
    Information theory, perhaps?
    Cryptonomicon was a good book.
    What were we talking about?

Exactly what I mean! In my head all the things I say seem to make a clear path back to the original topic, but I always have to explain it to the other party I am talking to. Unless they happen to do the same thing. I particularly enjoy the company of those who can just go along with my ramblings and interject their own, thus keeping the conversation constantly flowing and never becoming stagnant on one topic.

Would you believe I've had an all night conversation with 4 other people like this? An ENTP, ENTJ, INTJ and ISFJ who I've softened to my rambly ways.

Yes to all. Normally, I don't talk alot. But, when I do participate in a conversation, I have a tendency to ramble and move to a tangent. I'm sometimes asked to make the connection between my thought and the topic. I find this tedious. Sometimes, I'll just be listening to a conversation, have a side conversation in my head on a similar topic since it sparked a connection. After a few minutes, I'll initiate a discussion of what I was thinking believing I'm still in the "same neighbourhood" of the topic just discussed, and then be asked, "where did that thought come from?". The scope of what I define as 'being in the same neighbourhood' seems much larger the norm.

Other issues while speaking - stopping midstream to collect and organize my thoughts or receive other random thoughts that pop into my head; being accustomed to the observer position, I sometimes feel awkward and shy when I speak as I don't like the fact that all eyes are on me when i say something, so this sometimes affect the clarity of my message and I will ramble. Having spontaneous conversations doesn't always afford me the time to thoroughly process thoughts before expressing them. I don't have solid and definite opinions about issues often, as I like to consider the angles (the what if's). I will ramble as I express the 'what if's'. Unless participants are of the same mindset or interested in the topic, this will bore most people.

I much prefer writing my thoughts. It gives me time to organize them and consider relevance.

A lot of subjects are interconnected. It's not us INTP's, but the other people who have the difficulty of understanding that analyzing something as an isolated issue without relation to anything else is not exactly a valid approach.

So yes, I can wonder off sometimes but I do it with the mind on the original subject.

They usually shake their heads and walk away. This does not deter me from continuing.

it's a matter of working out the thought as you speak. You start out with a thought, but as you are speaking upon it, it develops in other ways.

If I have clarity in my posts, it's because I write out everything before hand and edit it a couple times over before submitting. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

This is also usually why, if I post upon a subject, it usually comes with a Wall o' Text (tm) because I'm also trying to provide the reasoning and steps behind the logic; it's not enough for me to provide solely an answers, but also to show how that answer was derived. The HOW is often more important than the end result, IMHO, since the HOW can help solve other problems.

Case in point, see this post. ;)

    Amen.

It's like a tennis player who studies the footage of the matches he has played regardless of the outcome of the match, or because of, or in spite of. The end point provides some context. But the process gives it the meaning it deserves.
