Do people mistakenly assume you're stupid?

I don't try to impress people with a display of intelligence. I am a quiet, humble person. I keep having the same recurring problem: encountering people who think I am stupid! The people who misjudge my intelligence are "S" types. They don't seem to understand that just because I am not aware of my physical surroundings, that doesn't mean I am stupid. I also tend to forget details that I don't see as important, like which way to turn the key to unlock my door or where I park my car. I tend to take a long time to respond to questions. I don't read books from beginning to end - I jump around a lot but probably do end up reading the entire book and don't care if I end up missing a chapter (I only do this with non-fiction). I told someone I do this, and she (S type) looked at me with disgust! What is that supposed to mean (Why did she judge me for that)? I seem to always get along with N types, and they tend not to misjudge me. What is going on here?

Maybe this is not an INTP thing; maybe it's just me!

Oh well, rest assured, you are not alone. Though I'm not quite sure I'd describe myself as being considered stupid (as in dumb).

    People mistakenly assume I'm brilliant.
But I think I know what you mean, since I'm usually thought of as book-smart, not street-smart or life-smart, and I appear immature, distraught, and childish.

I've noticed that some people have been taken aback when they found out that I knew or thought about certain things. I don't know why they would be so surprised unless they had assumed I was too stupid to know or think about them. just because I don't blab to everybody "hey, I know this! I think about that!" doesn't mean I don't know or think about anything. *roll eyes*

People assume I'm stupid and it's not until I blow away the class that they even begin to consder that I may be smart. Of course, having AS means that I can always be picked out in the crowd. It's barely present and I've been getting better, meaning able to keep my obsessive thoughts and focuses mostly in my head.

    I'm like this picture

Normally, I'm retiring and quiet, but I know a hell of a lot more than I let on.

    Yes. :/

I had one friend(intj), most brillant person I ever met. We got in a nasty fight over our ideals and havent talked in months. I miss our insightful conversations.

One of my best friends, an INTP, is known among her other (mostly SF) friends as an "airhead" for similar reasons. She is absent-minded and tries too hard to please sometimes, so people perceive her as dumb.

This is nothing new - people consider me dumb, too. I do not try very hard to please, but I am absent-minded, and sometimes I tend to mumble or stutter. I'm socially awkward.

perhaps not mistakenly in my case, haha.

at least for the people who surround me, memory alone seems to be the biggest indication of intelligence. i'm absent-minded and have terrible, terrible short-term detail memory which probably makes me appear "ditzy" to them. in new environments, i'm incredibly socially awkward and practically mute, and most people naturally equate that with stupidity.
