    INTP- advice..please?!

hey everyone. i know a few INT's, and i kind of got stuck. there are some questions i have about them.

    1. How should i go about helping an INT type with their problems??? the ones i know are very untrusting, they dont appear to take on all that much of what i say :S what could i do about that?

should i talk to them in an INTP mindset? or do i still go with my feelings and tell them what i beleive???

    2. What are the INTP's highest values? what do you value most out of all things? in life, love, friendships, or whatever.. everything

i would appreciate all answers ^^

I'm not sure it's fair to call us untrusting. We trust our own experience, and believe that you, likewise, trust your own experience. But, since you're not us, we probably won't be able to blindly agree that your solutions are the best for our problems.

What you might try is explaining your advice in a full context - if you had a similar problem to theirs, explain what your problem was, what your solution was, and why it worked. Dont focus on why your solution was the right one, focus on why it was right for you and what conditions made it work. This would give us a data point on how to possibly solve the problem. We would probably process this data and, while we might not follow your solution, it would certainly help us out.

    Uh, no idea.
We like independence and not oversimplifying things, so you're not going to get me to tie myself down to a single, simple answer. Sorry.

When I get so frustrated with a problem that I have to go and ask for outside assistance, I usually just want the person to listen and analyze. The input is always greatly appreciated at that point, but I basically only want their insight. I'm not always looking for them to give me a solution (much less push one on me) because as arrogant as it might seem, I think I'm still the only person who can come up with the best solution for me; likewise, I can't come up with a good enough solution for someone else. Sometimes I don't even care about finding a solution myself. Sometimes understanding the problem is the final solution .

In a nutshell, I want a different perspective just to make sure I'm not missing anything. Maybe if they ask you, you should help them better understand the problem rather than just shoot out solutions (not saying you do, but yeah).

"Live and let live", "To each his own". Those are my two highest values. I don't appreciate any restrictions on my autonomy, and neither would I enjoy limiting the autonomy of someone else. This is why I never have an answer for the question "Are you a leader or a follower?" when those two are the only options. I really think everything -- life, the world, friendships, etc -- would go so much more smoothly if people would just follow the "live and let live" philosophy.

Give them support, but not advice. Listen to what they say and ask them to re-explain if you don't understand. INTX's dislike being told what to do, so you're gonna have to learn how to phrase your words to make them into suggestions. You could also tell them about a similar situation (if you really were in one).

Just be yourself, though...try not to force your beliefs onto any of the INTXs

I value learning, but I also value love, friendships, etc... Really, we're not THAT different to "normal" people.

you don't need to alter yourself to communicate....... be yourself and if you give advice, it will mean more if you do it your way..... don't ask "how" you should help..... ask "if" you should...... whether or not advice hits home from other people (at least for me) depends on their authority..... if it's a situation you've been through and you came out the other side, then offer counsel...... if you're just sympathizing or talking out of your a** then it might be better to let them work it out for themselves.....

to continue what i was getting at..... when it comes to help, advice, counsel, or assistance, i value experience over opinion..... don't tell me how you feel about my problem, and certainly don't tell me how to fix it..... however, if it's something you actually know about firsthand, you can tell me A STORY about how YOU fixed it when it happened to YOU......

sometimes approaching it that way makes it seem less like you're trying to take control or force your opinion on me......

just remember.... if you KNOW the answer but haven't actually LIVED it..... it might be better to let an INTP discover it on his or her own.......

thanks all of you. i think i understand INTP's a bit better now ^^ they are all good comments.

although, with INTP's in the past, i have shared my experiences and what i did, but the way he looked and responded was pretty much saying, i dont beleive you were in the same situation as me, im too individual for you to understand me...
i was like..what?! hmmmmm ok then...... i mean, im an INFJ, how could you get more individual??? a lonely 1%.
anyways, what should i do if the person reacts like that? should i just accept that i said my part and leave them to it or what?

    thanks again everyone

Yes, it would probably be wise to leave them be.

#1. Just suffer with us and try to help. Give us the information and the method, and let us solve the problem.

I'll put myself in their shoes and tell you how I'd respond.

    1. I don't really want to know about your feelings, they're quite irrelevant to the problem at hand. But the fact that you care and want to help makes me feel I can trust you. Just don't beat around the bush.

    2. Honesty and fairness.
