I also listen almost exclusively to ProgRock (ca. 90 %), the other 10 % being musical genres which influence ProgRock, e.g. Jazz, classical music or (interesting / atmospheric) pop music. The sound is not so important, it can be fast, "aggressive" ProgMetal or more relaxing music with bright sounds. I am curious if INTPs are the most likely personality type to be attracted to ProgRock. It would not make me wonder as this genre is characterized by complex structures (NT), a lot of freedom for the composers (P) - there are basically no rules, every instument is allowed - and it is typically music which needs a lot of time to get familiar with and is not easy to dance to (I).
I've always thought we gravitate towards rock/metal. @constant-Change pretty much beat me to it, with the reasons.
Also, perhaps, metal/rock can be a comfort for a gifted and outcasted child. Introverted NTs can be very gifted and very outcasted, due to what society rewards and what it shuns.
Smart Kids Listen To Heavy Metal
According to iTunes, most of my music is either in the genre (in order) is Rock, Electronic, and Alternative.
I don't branch out very much, I usually like to listen to just one song over and over again for a few months, until I get tired of it and move on to another song. It's the same way with musicians, depending on how often they release new songs and how many songs/albums they've released before I learned of their existance.
I've never listened to metal, though. I'd be willing to try, though the music I like is usually more subtle, in terms of meaning, emotions, and volume. I usually don't listen to very loud music, or music that doesn't suit my mood. I don't usually "lose myself" in music, it's more like the music makes my surroundings more like the inside of my head, and helps me to focus more.
I'm probably way too picky with my music. I probably shouldn't be, but I find it hard to find music that I like.
Very few people listen to hip hop how sad. On another note I also like electronic style music but abhor metal. I don't really like rock either but I can tolerate some of it.
I choose "all of the above" at different times, in different moods. Lately, I've been enjoying Zappa's Yellow Shark album. When I drink a lot of whiskey, I hear Lynyrd Skynyrd echoing in my mind, even when there's no music playing. Usually, I like to drive to work listening to the Geto Boys, before I need to roll up my window.
I'm not sure if "Vocaloid" is a genre, or an artist, or simply a culture.
Personally, songs need to sound good, and the lyrics need to be a kind of documentary, or display a very interesting concept. Love Songs, Modern Club music, whatnot just don't cut it.
I don't like Rap as a genre, nor Eminem to the point where I follow his every move (or any artist) but the way he tells a story in one or two of his songs is quite commendable. Vocaloid songs, however, I do follow. Mainly because they're made by ordinary people and some of the things within them can tell a very nice story, or they capture an emotion.
However, over all, my Music Library holds probably a good 80% of Anime and Video Game OST. Because I've been through things with that music, that song encases the emotion of that one scene, that area, ready to be opened at any time.
I mostly listen to classic rock. Followed by heavy metal, punk (horror, rock, etc), and grunge.
But then I also love artists like Simon & Garfunkel, Run-D.M.C., and neither smooth or acid jazz, but just Miles Davis, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, etc.
Metallica (mostly)
Slayer
Pantera
Eminem / D12
Korn
With all kinds of other stuff tossed in. Just as long as its not this mainstream Bieber bullshit
