    Seriously though, if you design a robot with the dexterity to play against humans in a game of footy, you can imagine all the applications you can come up with that would benefit from that - mining, exploring, even military. Bipedal skeletons are just so robust and can handle so many more scenarios than a rover design. Bomb squads would never have to run out and rescue the robots as they can handle any terrain a human can anyway. Robot sports are just a seemingly benign way to develop them.

    Consider how much money the average professional athlete earns. Now consider how much money the average robotics engineer earns. You'd also have the added advantage of driving interest in the STEM fields, not to mention the possibilities for empowering the disabled.
