Had this idea at work today.
Post the most interesting random fact / article / technology you have found in the last week.

You can post more than one if you would like, but I though it would be interesting to make it sort of a weekly thing to share the coolest thing you've found on the web. I like random fact generaters and things like stumbleupon.com, so it would be cool to see what other INTJs found the most interesting.

Well, during one of my frequent endeavours into the romantically-driven female mind (which is a better way of saying 'I went on a girl's dating site to see how good their advice was) I encountered this.

It says 73% of men expect sex on valentines.
And then it says that 48% of men want sex on valentines...

The other 25% of men are presumably being raped each valentines day...

That is too stupid. I went to the page and looked over the forums.. I can't even fathom.. How do they explain how someone could fly from california to japan, the short way?

I'll one up you.

Koala's not only have finger prints, but are similar to the humans.

Similar enough, that should koalas rape and murder someone (it's likely), the police would have dozens of fingerprints that match anyone.

Would you have to soak your fingers in the juice? I assume it's from the acid. God knows my tongue burns after eating too many pineapples (but I do love them).

Or do you mean that if I touched something and put pineapple juice on it that it would clean them up? I doubt that's your line of thought, seeing as how anything (almost) could do that, but thought I might as well cover my bases.

Either way, I'm intrigued.

on the speculations on the human brain evolution, i think that one of the more popular ones concern our need for bigger brains to make and use tools
i found another that i like better: competition between the genes for manipulation and the genes for resistance to manipulation :D

I've also heard the theory that tools+fire helped our brains get larger because the fat and protein that is needed to build brain tissue is more concentrated in meat, so when we started hunting our own meat instead of scavenging, our brains grew.

But there are so many theories on the evolution of the brain. Most of them make sense and are very plausible, but we don't have an exact way to replicate the environment, unfortunately. Nonetheless, <3 evolutionary anthropology.

This is traumatizing to me, thanks.

You have more bacteria on and in your body than cells
That too.

I really want this furniture that moves around, has as least two functions and saves space....I'm pretty sure other INTJs can see the efficiency in these
I think I'm falling in love all over again.

Effeciency For The Win!

Research by Daphne Bavelier from University of Rochester has done research showing that playing 50 hours of violent video games (i.e. Call of Duty) for one hour a day, five days a week for ten weeks, produces some interesting long term effects:

1. Improved vision (by correcting the cortex, rather than your actual eye)

2. Improved reaction time (rather than making it worse as one would assume if video games caused ADHD)

3. Improves selecting attention ability in time and with objects in space.
- Can push your attentional capacity from 4 items up to 6.5 on average.
- Professional gamers can keep track of 9 separate items at once.

4. Enhances your attentional control.
- Basically, it makes you better at suppressing unimportant information, so that you only pay attention to important things. Again, very unlike ADHD.

5. The abilities gained during the 50 hours transfer, unlike in many other training programs

6. May reverse some effects of aging.

7. You will receive these benefits regardless of gender or age.

Note: The trick is that the game can't force routines on you, it is just supposed to increase how sharp you are. This is why games like Call of Duty or the like are good. They have the right mixture of the unpredictable and ability to explore. Technically these games don't need to be violent to work, but all the current games with the right system happen to be.

I learned about this research at a conference last weekend. All the moral guardians there were very concerned about the violence. Anyway, I know how I'm spending summer vacation.
A couple of other interesting things about video games:
Surgeons who play video games do better. Surgeons may err less by playing video games - Technology & science - Games - msnbc.com

I know a lady with heart problems. She discovered that they are not as bad when she's playing video games. Her doctor perscribed video games and her health insurance actually pays for them.

You might be interested in reading Reality is Broken by Jane McGonigal. I haven't read it yet (planning to), but it seems to be about how video games are actually very beneficial not just to individuals, but to societies as a whole. From what I can tell, the author seems to focus more on simulation games though, not FPS and MMOs as you're referring to. Still somewhat related and still sounds like an intriguing read in my opinion.
