It's so fascinating to read about people being correct with their gut instinct about people. I've never been good at that, so I have had to find alternate ways to use discernment to become a good judge of character. What I look for is consistent behavior. I usually use my mistrust of Fe to identify people who seem too nice or too good to be true. But doing this from the beginning just escapes me. I love the way you all have expressed how you do this. It's like looking at the world through a completely different lens, but that lens makes sense to me.

One thing is very striking to me. When I have a really good first impression of someone I tend to be more mistrustful vs someone I have a neutral or negative impression of. I think I figure that if I can identify faults in that person, then that person is somehow more safe because they're more honest and put their cards on the table.

Oh yes, I've had this happen to me multiple times before, but I've made the mistake of not listening to my gut and tried to rationalize why I felt a certain way about someone. No amount of data can really help when on a deeper level you just feel that something is not right about a particular person or situation.

I wanted to post something here, but it sure took me awhile. Basically, the answer for me is yes. I normally observe people and guess their personality. In doing so, its normally obvious to tell whether to trust a person or not, preferable or a miss based on their body language. One of the most effective ways I picked up is to notice patterns in their behaviour. Often there are people who behave similarly, have the same vibe/feel to them which are familiar, like youve seen it before it someone else, which helps you guess the traits they have. Also, some of the more obvious traits can be accompanied with other traits they might have, which makes them easier to guess. My process to identify someones character is 1. Observe 2. Predict 3.Test/challenge prediction 4.Observe more to ensure Im right.
Have I been wrong, hmm, really seldom.

Yes. I want to say "always" because I can't think of a time where my instinct was wrong on this front, but I'm sure there have such instances too. It's making me sad when people are nice on the surface but I keep getting the feeling that something is off about them, and they are not to be trusted. Because it turns out to be true. I am getting this impression now from an ENTJ I have met, and it's making me very sad because everything looks right and good on the surface, yet I am getting the undeniable alarm bell ringing, that things are very twisted and warped, and that something big just isn't right, underneath the surface of sensibility, normality and charity. And I know I am right again, I just don't know why, yet..

Ah, I know that feel. Had an Entj colleague, we bonded well, worked well together and everything went well. Though its great, I knew something might go wrong under intentions, so being wary is one thing to mind, also taking nite what might happen after 'everything'. This gut-feeling has been really useful, at times I knew immediately if someone could be my friend just by observing them.
