What are some good careers for INFJ in the real world? I have read some of the books and web sites but frankly think a few of them are way off. Can any of the other INFJ types here offer some of their best and worst experiences?

I HATED working in retail. Even when I was management it was too confinng.
Anything entrepeneurial is good - you answer to yourself, have it your way.
Independant contracting... I sell real estate. 80% good 20% bad, I guess. When you have to work with assholes it can suck. And if you are not competative enough to earn your business....
I'd love to own an antique store or art studio, pottery..... something like that.

You shouldn't limit your career choices to just things based on what your type enjoys, go for what you enjoy whether or not your type in general likes it.
I think benevolent dictator would suit me well...
I have worked in a lot of different fields in my life and at this point I enjoy working for myself. If I could get paid to work in the woods or study animals or nature in some way or maybe farm. I think the older I get the more I want to be alone in my work.
Retail scares me. I like sticking with what I know best. The Arts.
I rarely see an INFJ in real life so its quite difficult for me to advice a career. I agree with you though, some websites that list these careers may be totally off.
I'm thinking about living in the mountains as a hermit.
How about becoming a new version of Zaratustra, sure would help out humanity.
OR if you want to calm down your idealism a little bit, how about some background about your life so i could give you better advise... oh, talking about advice how about counselor, consultant, teacher...?
too true! what's the projetion now, that people will have 6-8 careers in their lifetime? puting all your eggs in one basket is not a good play in the long run. My story's long, so I'll spare people that, but if I had college to do over, I'd double major at least! and from what I can tell, a business degree is known for its versatility as much as its financial potential. business seems to have a lot of overlap in a lot of ways with all sorts of fields.
when I went back to school to get a teacher's cert, I had to take a class taught by a Psych. prof- after talking with him, he didnt put that much stock in personality types being so crystalized anyway. people probably have a strong leaning one way, but can wear a lot of masks, a career being one of them sometimes.
