Please be sure to always use a competent spotter if you are trying to lift a lot of weight!
Several years ago, a trainer at one of the gyms I go to encouraged me to try a max bench...said she's spot me. Bench pressing has always made me nervous, as I feel less in control of the lift than I do when I squat or deadlift (easier to drop the weight during those if necessary). When I was at the top of a lift, she ran off to talk to someone...and left me struggling with the bar. Thankfully I was able to tip the bar to the side enough to keep it from landing on my chest, and someone nearby ran over to help (probably because I was screaming).
Unfortunately, this guy was not so lucky...he died shortly after the incident.
This video shows the bar fall onto his chest. He sits up afterward and appears out of it. I thought he might have survived, but another article I read explained that he later died at the hospital.
I feel strange about posting the video, even though it doesn't show his death...but I feel it is an important warning, as I have personally seen many people attempt dangerous things in the gym over the years.
