Bjork is my absolute, all-time, most-highly-adored musician, so you can imagine I spend some time brooding about which type she must be. It was actually a google search for the answer to the above question that lead me to PerC in the first place, but I can't find that thread anymore. So I'd like to start my own, and I really look forward to hearing some theories. First, I'll present mine:
I have a strong hunch that she's IN*J, with a perceived edge toward the INFJ type. Here's why:
- I hypothesize that she's Ni-dom. People with this function often describe their thought process as highly visual; they think in images, symbols. Bjork's music is extremely visually evocative and I get inspired when I hear her music. I find it very easy to develop visual narratives for her songs. Also, Ni-doms are convergent thinkers. Instead of finding many different ways to say one thing, as some Ne-doms might, she looks for one way to say many different things, or at least to convey many different thoughts within a particular system. This is apparent from her album titles: Debut, Post, Homogenic... She looks for the potential expressive meaning in one word that reflects the emotion/concept of the album, and these words often "just come to [her]": classic Ni phenomenon. Plus she's all "otherworldly", a quality often indicative of Introverted Intuitives.
- I'd lean toward the idea that she's INJ instead of INP because of that conspicuous aura of "definiteness", of certainty and confidence. I'd say this is more a symptom of her functional stack than of life-experience due to the fact that she appears to have been a rather precocious child, releasing her first album at like 10 or something. She herself thought she was one of those know-it-alls, and INPs usually are more doubtful of themselves than INJs. She does have an extreme sense of personal authenticity I would associate with INFPs, but other factors seem to weigh the scales in favor of an INJ type.
- As far as the T/F dichotomy, it's somewhat difficult to be certain. Her expression is extremely emotional and her aesthetic sense is sophisticated, and both a T and an F preference would allow Extraverted Sensing as a part of her stack. Both would preclude an interest in structure and systems, and her music constantly focuses on working within conceptual systems (beats and strings manifesto of Homogenic, introverted beats and ebullient choirs of Vespertine, and the vocal exploration of Medulla) and though her music is abstract, it is extremely structured. There is a pattern to her song progression that marks a habit toward stucture. Her focus on "personal politics" in her music indicates that, if ever so slightly, she's higher on the feeling end of the scale, though INTJs, too, can be extremely interested in human systems (hence their pervasiveness on this forum). Still, her desire to create harmony in her interpersonal relationships (just watch the documentary Minuscule; she creates a paradise for her tour-mates), her eagerness to collaborate with others, and the spiritual, even religious invocations of some songs indicate a spiritual awareness more common among INFJs than INTJs, and thus I tentatively type Bjork as an INFJ.
What do you think?
