I could go into a long dissertation about how the N functions are centered in the Cingulate system, which is the mental switchboard that can never shut off, but the simple answer is that Ni is tied to the parts of the mind responsible for dreaming. Therefore, the part of our minds that should take over when sleeping are already operating while we are awake, making it very difficult for us to get to sleep.

The end result is feeling like we can never shut our minds off.

Some of my Ne friends have exhibited insomnia issues, but they seem to be able to nap and catch up on their sleep much better than the Ni users I know, but I couldn't verify which type is more likely to suffer from insomnia (he posted at 5am).

It's one of the side effects to balance the amazing insights of N.
That's a very interesting analysis. It makes perfect sense.

I'm currently in a weird funk where I'm back to being awake for 36 hours, sleeping 2, and the pattern repeats. I'll leave the house quite early in the morning, or sometimes very late at night...it does beat the 4-day stretches, though.

It has always been hard for me to fall asleep. I'm ENFP.

I always have trouble falling asleep. Too often my mind is full of stuff I have to think abt when I lie on bed. Good thing is once I actually sleep, I'm quite a sound sleeper. ISFP btw.

I sleep 8-10 hours uninterrupted. INTP. I have trouble falling asleep before 2 am, but then I have no trouble sleeping until noon.

I might argue the thing about N's specifically being prone to insomnia. I mean, it certainly makes sense for me. Since I was little I've taken longer to fall asleep than most anyone I know. Perhaps these are just isolated or irrelevant cases (well, they're relevant, but maybe not in your opinion, the reader), but my INFJ godfather sleeps like a baby, whereas my ISFJ godmother is up late and up early. She is either awake at 3 when I come out for water, or she's awake at 6 when I come out to pee. However, my INFJ godfather and I are most often the last one's up, talking into 1 or sometimes 2 AM.

Then I know an INFP who says she never has any trouble getting to sleep. Her INTP roommate, however, is like me and can't get her brain to STFU long enough to allow her to slip into unconsciousness.

The only time I have trouble sleeping is when I can't get comfortable (ie the room is too hot). Other then that, I fall asleep pretty quickly. If my mind is ever racing, I just put it to work. I'll daydream and let my imagination go wild, and that usually helps me slip right into actual dreaming/sleep.

I'm an ISFJ and yes i have hard time sleeping too, there are also instances that i'm awake for 30hours straight and then become moody..

There are some nights where I have a hard time sleeping at all. Often times, there are nights where I can't fall asleep until 2am or so, or heck even 4am. The earliest I am ever really able to fall asleep unless really tired is around 1030ish or so. This has been ever since I can remember. Sometimes I wake up around 2-3 in the morning or so and can't fall back asleep afterwards XD I'm either INTJ or INTP (always thought INTP for some time but am starting to wonder if I'm INTJ lol)
