    Sexual abstinence and the psyche

I used to suffer from severe OCD, PTSD, GAD, Depression and Social Phobia and have now had a full remission of all of them. Sexual abstinence where I did not have sex or masturbate and have an orgasm for 3-4 months helped me recover. It brought all the anxieties up to the surface where I could conquer them and did.

I believe sexual abstinence is a need in all human beings for them to achieve a state of mind of complete harmony. This in combination with meditation, Kung Fu, Yoga or Tai Chi also makes the effects of the sexual abstinence much more potent.

    What do you think?

I think that sexual abstinence, and voluntary celibacy as a way to redirect your sexual energy into other things, like research, art...
The state of sexual frustration is at time transformed to an desire, and an ideal, and a need for creativity.
Freud said that good work cant be accomplished if sexuals instinct needs are filled, and I trust this.

Common thought, but thats what I agree with. But im not ready for sexual abstinence :p

Its not just sexual energy you are redirecting.. you can go without eating and sleep as well in order to have more focus on something else at hand. Look at what wizards and shamans go through before rituals.

Never really agreed with Freud, but it is true that with sexual frustration comes the need to be creative. I often find however that my creativity can be heightened after an orgasm. Now, however lies a long time of sexual abstinence for me. It's hard but I was forced to take anti-psychotics because I was apparently too elated and that classified me as mentally ill, so the peace of mind I had has dampened, but it will come again, it is just a matter of time

I think my prostate would grow arms and legs, grab a butcher knife, and slice off my head.

Its mental harmony only if you've used sexual release as an analgesic for other latent problems. This may actually be an argument against masturbation in favor of actual intercourse as the goals may be different.

I feel bad sometimes for ppl who feel that they absolutely cannot go without sexual release for any length of time. The positive benefits of abstinence can be amazing, depending on the circumstances. I havent found too many ppl who agree with me, however.

I've heard that total sexual abstinence causes hormonal imbalances, which is the reason I have refrained from it. Still I would so much rather go without any temptations, which perhaps getting through the mental conditioning of not having them may be the hardest challenge that causes the imbalances.

Nice now I have something new to research.

I haven't had sex in years. I once abstained from masturbation for seven months, and the usual triggers still caused panic attacks, without any changes. I'm not convinced that what you experienced was universal, but I am glad you were blessed with an answer to your problems.

I agree, there are various methods to direct your internal energy through focusing on certain things. Some are quicker than others, but the results vary widely. I think a 3-day detox (juice fast) altered my mind/body more than 2 months abstinence, but they are in different and interesting ways. There is definitely a sense of power that arises when you don't "give in", so to speak.
