    Marines, the military and Muslims

Don't take me the wrong way. I love and support the people who are putting their lives on the line to die for my freedoms. This recent experience has rubbed me the wrong way and made me curious...
I have a friend who is going to join the Marines. He is 17 and will be swearing in this summer. Recently, four Muslim girls moved into our school and they are visibly Muslim - they keep themselves covered except for their hands and faces and pray at the times of the day that they need to. My friend took an immediate dislike to them and started calling them "Devil spawn," "towel heads" and saying things like "Where's the fucking bomb?" and "Their kind shouldn't be welcome here." I listened to him ramble on and on and just nodded and smiled to see where he was going with this rant. Eventually, he said something to the effect of "I can't wait to join the Marines. I will finally fit in somewhere. I'll never have to deal with fucking Islam again unless I'm shooting at it. I'll kill some fucking towel heads for Jesus!!! Hoorah!!!"

I somehow have A LOT of trouble believing that the Marines would tolerate that. But that's me. Does anyone here have some experience in the armed forces? Is this really widely accepted behavior? Something tells me this kid is just a little screwed over in the head...but I have certainly been known to be wrong.

You can't fix stupid. The Marines will pound it out of him; he'll be surrounded by Muslims day and night, and unless he learns to separate the faith from the enemy, he will not have a positive experience. Prolonged exposure to average Muslims in the middle east will likely at least temper his overt hatred. Most Marines, or USAF members in general, are not at all like that and won't take kindly to it at all.

That makes me VERY happy. Thanks for the insight :)
Stupid people will just always be stupid I suppose...but even the dumbest can be trained to act like they aren't when they need to

To say that the military in america doesn't have a large, midwest/south christian contingent would be lying. That said, the number of O-3s and above who would tolerate that kind of shit is pretty low. That said, marines talk shit all the time; it can be hard to tell how serious they are.

One of my best friends in college was a marine and a hindu. He didn't have too many complaints about it. We had a couple muslims on my boat, I don't think they were given more shit than anyone else.
