    Cultural Laments

so this came up in the photo gallery thread in a discussion with SupaKawaii... and I guess it's time to make a new thread for it (before it unravels off into a new discussion and clutters that one).

This was my last post, which I'll just quote here...

seriously, am I the only one who gets pissed off by this? (not you, SupaKawaii--society & its expectations)
Or maybe not pissed off.. but at least internally strained. How did things get to this point? Is anyone here old enough to know?
Farther context can be found on page 44 of the photo gallery discussion thread. Does anyone else think things like this (or any other complaints you can find against the culture or its expectations) are as unhealthy as I do? Do you have any other experiences to throw into the mix concerning the culture and its expectations for you?

I only requested it because I thought it warranted its own thread. Cluttering the picture thread isn't high on my list of concerns. Several conversations have been buried in it already.

Yes, it sucks a great deal to be held to standards of behavior that are not my own. If it isn't something I choose for myself, it isn't something I want regulating the way I think or behave and thus the standard can't be entirely applicable.

I tried playing lip service to counter-culture for a while in high school. It was easier than concerning myself with completely normative behavior. I gave that up around the time I realized that counter-culture evolves in lock-step with mainstream culture, with superfluous social rituals and expectations of its own.

Is this the reason she is asking me to delete her account?

    I certainly hope not.

I did the same for a while before becoming apathetic to even that.

What is most disappointing is the expectation that everyone should be extroverted, and those who are not are clearly unhappy and unhealthy. I cannot stand the condescension of some ignorant extrovert (I apologize to the extroverts on this forum) who tells me that there's something wrong with me because I don't like socializing, that there's something wrong with me just because I only have a few friends, each of whom I have selected for good reason. I despise the lectures a few classmates have given me about how I should "learn to have fun" or "loosen up and have a good time," as if partying were the only objective way to have fun.
