    Human Physical Anomalies

    [Warning: Some of these videos are disturbing to watch]

    It's sad to see people suffering from conditions like these. It makes our trivial problems in life seem miniscule in comparison.

    This is a video taken from a mobile phone in a kurdish hospital. the cause of this misshaped child is the effect of chemical weapons (on the parents/grandparents), used by saddam hussein in the late 80's.

    I couldn't even watch some of those, I'm so squeemish.
    Stuff like this really makes me feel grateful to be alive and well. Sometimes I forget that other problems like this exist. Very interesting thread idea, Shadow, it looks like you spent a lot of time putting it all together.

    Thanks. Actually, it only took about 5 minutes. Most of the videos were linked to each other. I randomly came acrossed the video of the guy with a hole in his head and followed the others from there. I honestly didn't know most of these conditions existed.

    The third video is of a baby with Harlequin Ichthyosis (sp?). It's really horrible. Luckily it's rare, but few babies live past infancy with it. I actually saw a TV show about this one boy who manages with the disease. It's truly amazing that he still has a good attitude with what he has to go through every day.

    I know. Imagine how hard it would be to get over something like that. Not only the physical stress, but the emotional stress and energy involved as well. You know people would talk about you behind your back with any of those conditions. The emotional pain would scar probably more than the physical pain would. You really would have to be a very strong person to live like that. If there is a heaven, I wonder if they get extra rewards for going through all of that. There's got to be some sort of mercy in this world.

    Have you ever heard of the Elephant Man? I think it's a movie, and it's related to things like this. You might enjoy it, although it's pretty old..

    The Elephant Man (1980)

    "Tis true my form is something odd,
    But blaming me is blaming God;
    Could I create myself anew
    I would not fail in pleasing you.
    If I could reach from pole to pole
    Or grasp the ocean with a span,
    I would be measured by the soul;
    The mind's the standard of the man."

    The Elephant Man was real (Joseph Merrick).

    This is what they speculate he would have looked like without his condition.

    I never knew he was real, I wanted to think it wasn't. I wish people would have treated him better...
    If you think about it, his life wasn't really such a useless shame. Now that we know stuff like that is a medical condition, we can use is life as an example to treat people like him with more kindness and respect. Lives like this are such a tragedy, I wish there was more to be done to help people with conditions such as these.

    So true. I try to imagine how I would respond to people with such conditions if I saw them in public. At first, I think there would be a bit of shock or disbelief, trying to figure out exactly what I'm looking at. It's rude to stare at people, but curiosity might get the best of me unless I thought they were aware of my glances. I hope I would have the decency to treat them like a person and not a sub-human creature, but I guess nobody really knows how they would react unless they witnessed it firsthand.

    It's truly heartbreaking, isn't it?
