    The nerdier side of things

I just finished organizing my books by series first and then the ones I have by the same author leaving the remainder for the end. I did consider alphabetizing them or organizing them by height. I battled with the decision whether or not I should stick the books by the same author but didn't go with the series together. In the end, I kept them seperate. I did however stick my bird and writing books together and called it my reference section. I feel better now that I've gotten them sorted out. It was driving me crazy to have them all over the place.

Does anyone else do this kind of thing?

I don't do that, I just organize books by size: big books on shelves with lots of space in between, medium books for medium spaces, and small books for small spaces.

Back when i lived at my moms i would organize all of her dvds. Id get so irritated at her horrible taste and having to look thru all of them whenever i wanted to find a movie to watch. So i would organize them by 'real good', 'watchable', and 'wtf seriously?'. then i would order alphabetically and wala, now i have my own real little section of movies to look thru, why i still actually alphabetized the 'wtf' movies i dk, mainly boredom i guess.

My books would be organized if i had a bookshelf, instead theyre scattered through out boxes. If i did tho itd be by category/series

I organize primarily by genre. At the top of the bookshelf are non-technical math and science books, and computer books. The second shelf has the technical math books and handouts from classes. Third are primarily fiction books, though the occasional philosophical book is thrown in, all of which are sorted according to size. Fourth are a stack of old technical engineering books I've never looked at with odd ends on the other side, mostly fiction. Fifth are most of the rest of my college textbooks (I never sell any back), and a stack of foreign language books that I always swear I'm going to learn.

Owing to one particular compulsion, I try to sort according to size (specifically area of the cover) as much as possible. I can't express how irritating it is to have a book that is shorter than the other but wider than the other.

In short, I stick books with similar topics, similar levels of technicality, and similar size together. Surprisingly, it manages to work, most of the time.

I've actually organised our books the same way: first by series and the left over by author. On top of that, it's by genre with the fantasy fiction on the shelfs, reference books at the bottom, and non-fiction/religious studies/computer books in set boxes for them.

Also, our movie collection is in alphabetical order...as are the spices in the kitchen...drinks by volume height...
