I wasn't even aware spelling could BE intimidating

Haha, no it was more of a joke/analogy. Because text is all we really see of the other people online, their spelling, grammar, and actual ideas conveyed are all we have to make those "judgments" that people make - consciously or subconsciously - about other people. So for instance a person with good grammar but poor spelling might simply come off as "tired" or "lazy" while someone with both poor grammar and spelling might be seen as "immature" or worse. It's not really a fair judgment to make, but it's one that humans tend to make anyway (again, subconsciously), based on their perceptions of grammar and spelling importance. Then the actual ideas conveyed, however properly, stress that initial judgment so that one might feel compelled to either fully agree or disagree with what the person has said.
People do that in real life, too, obviously, but have a lot more things with which to base a judgment - like clothing, hair color, style, physical features. So I guess the internet, in its simplicity, is either really shallow or very genuine in the way it presents us (and the way we present ourselves).
And I stay away from cameras at all times - especially when the internet is involved.
