I know it's a clinical matter. I was just responding to your post about Ni, which wasn't clear to me in the first place how it tied in to this topic. But I had to correct your fallacies.

Also MBTI ESTPs tend to be socionics ESTp's just because the extraverted functions are more similar between the two systems, and tend to correspond with rationality/irrationality. Hence the extrapolation.

Socionics does anticipate the possibility of ESTp's becoming depressed for the reasons ESTPs here have mentioned. Treating depression, however, should be addressed by a psychiatrist, particularly if one is feeling suicidal.

But I dont see anything wrong with letting him know he has a dual out there, to give him some hope and motivation to go out on this quest, and a reason to live. Believe me, it's worth it!! Duality=awesome!

What fallacy? I stated that depression does not come into play since it’s a mental health issue. Not everything in life equates to type. I referred to Naomi Quenck’s MBTI work on how ESTPs go into the grip which is probably the closest thing to how types may think when unhealthy.

I think this is where fallacy lies, since one of us is off topic referring to two different systems. Socionics and MBTI do not correlate and is an apple/orange discussion. The fact that you state that intuition does not come into play with Socionics proves that. So the question remains did I get it wrong that this thread is about ESTP (S-T-N-F) or ESTp (SLE per Socionics)? If the topic is based on the latter then I recant my statement. ESTP can only be the arbiter of which system she was referring to.

I just googled symptoms of depression and went to this site:

Sure, most of us feel sad, lonely, or depressed at times. And feeling depressed is a normal reaction to loss, life's struggles, or an injured self-esteem. But when these feelings become overwhelming and last for long periods of time, they can keep you from leading a normal, active life. That's when it's time to seek medical help.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, symptoms of depression may include the following:
    · difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
    · fatigue and decreased energy
    · feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and/or helplessness
    · feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism
    · insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
    · irritability, restlessness
    · loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex
    · overeating or appetite loss
    · persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment
    · persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" feelings
    · thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
I am in agreement with Tree Bob that all types can and do become depressed, but based on what I have read, ETPs seem to remain in the grip for long periods, thus may be the types that would overcome bouts of depression rather quickly.

I have a big problem with this. It's extremely hard to "do" when you don't want to "do" anything. That's what's why depression/dysthymia is so disabling to an ESTP I believe.

I'm an ESTP suffering from dysthymia...it happens. Kind of sucks, but it happens. Basically, I can't remember the last time I felt like I had real goals, and I end up setting low standards now to avoid failure because I can't handle it.

I second treebob, I went through severe depression(twice) and I never told my friends about it(seeking help) and was a groggy jerk to people because of it. Depression kills the core of our personalities and robs us of our play around/ joke around selves making us miserable and no longer the glowing charismatic people we are. With that being said, feel free to inbox me. i am currently working on defeating the 2nd wave of depression.
    Eighty thanked this post.

I'm a terribly depressed ESTP (due to physical illness causing career setbacks and in addition a failing marriage), and it has led me to not seeing any future that I would enjoy, and then, how do I motivate myself? I DON'T HAVE GOALS anymore. It's horrible, and I don't know how to get out of this. It's not about actions - I realize I am the only one who can pull myself out of this, and I am able to. The problem is I don't see any reason to. So I've ended up isolating more and more from people, and I do very, very little. I'm mostly not feeling alive, so why live?

Do anyone have experiences, or does it exist theory on ESTPs and depression?
I am going through some depression at the moment as well. I can give you my advise of what I do to feel better.
Keep yourself really really really busy!! Do whatever you really enjoy, sports (I do Muay Thai) you feel great after and Yoga. Read some books that you are interested and perhaps self help books and heal yourself spiritually. That works for me. Go out for drinks with friends, if you have a good friend ask them to go listen to you. If you still have time, watch plenty of tv series. After a while, it will put me back in shape. Sometimes it will take weeks to do the trick, sometimes just a shorter time, depending the situation.
    Hope this helps.

I have been through bouts of depression (if you want to call it that, it's SAD 90% of the time), but I never really admit it to health professionals for my own personal reasons. I just know that I become someone I don't understand and I question why I am like the way I am, and try to find long term solutions to fixing the way I feel, if possible. Temporary solutions work just as well, but take a lot more effort in thinking of new ones and putting the work in it.

If you haven't yet, try and see if you are able to see a mental health professional. I'd recommend going to people you trust to get recommendations to someone, or doing trial-and-error, as a lot of mental health professionals lose my trust very quickly due to their lack of trust in my abilities or what have you and once that happens it's SOL in terms of treatment.

    Anyone can get depressed.
It shouldn't matter if you're feeling physically ill or sick emotionally. if it's something that lasts for months or longer - seeking help from someone who understands and will keep it confidential is gonna help most people get over it efficiently. At some point, if nothing else work, you'll have to man up.

If you've got time, read these (if you haven't already):
http://www.clinical-depression.co.uk/dlp/understanding-depression/understanding-depression/ [Every single link on the left sidebar up to III]
http://arseba.org/Library/Psychology%20Complete/Applied%20psychology/ClinicalPsychology/Feeling%20Good%20The%20New%20Mood%20Therapy%20-%20David%20Burns.pdf [Large file. May take a long time to load. Ignore the cheesy language, author doesn't study literature (probably).]

Even if it doesn't help it won't kill you.
