What's it take to get you to get a job done?

I'm posting this in all the personality forums.

So I'm working on my leadership here, and a big part of it involves understanding how the different personalities of my subordinates communicate. I could be the greatest guy in the world, but if I told an ISTP to do something "because unfortunately that's how it is" they'll probably just fight back (even if I said it with a calm tone of voice and a smile).

So, what does it take to drive you to do something you ordinarily wouldn't want to?

I like concrete examples, so I'll give some examples of my own for you to base your answers off of if it helps.

-If I told you to chip paint for hours on end

    -Do endless paperwork.

-or do something comletely mundane and stupid like sort out garbage before being put into a furnace anyway.

    -Get to work on time

It depends. Is this my job that I'm getting paid for? Do we carry a friendly banter when we interact other times?

Basically I just don't like being told "You, do this." Tell me "I need to get this done," or "Can I get you to help me with something?"

I like it to be presented to me as if there's an option to say no, even if there isn't one. That could be just me. I like to feel like I'm helping out by my choice.

Right... being ESTP I'm wondering how many times I'll post on this forum... as I may just get bored of it...

    But to answer your question:

    Chipping paint: Bribery
Endless Paperwork: Threatening (blackmail won't work, as they'll just kill that part of themselves that really cares so that they don't really care and thus... they're nearly impossible blackmail...)
Mundane and useless: Give up, it is futile. Boring, mundane and useless is the worst possible combination, and will probably elicit comments (quite heartfelt) such as "I would rather cut off my own [valuable and essential body part] than do that"
Get to work on time: My ISTP mate will only respond to straightup honesty (not threatening or dictatorship), if he sees the logic and can attain some sort of gratification, he'll shift himself. If he feels patronized, controlled or bullied... He'll dig his heels in or else run a mile.
