    Reading Manuals?

Do ESTPs read manuals before using a new item? Do you have the patience to do this? Or do you just figure out how to use the item on your own?

I'll go ahead and throw the whole "do you use maps?" out there as well. I've seen my ESTP dad and another ESTP man use their wives to either plot a new course and look it up, or have their wives punch it in on their GPS when they are together. Otherwise, I think my dad goes by instinct anywhere. Lol.

Tell me your thought process behind your "yes" or "no" answer, please.

It depends on what I'm doing. If it's a piece of IKEA furniture, then I'll have a vague look at the instructions to make sure I've got the right idea before diving in. If it's something like an alarm clock or a TV, then I'll almost always completely ignore the instructions.

As for maps, I only really use them if it's somewhere I've never been to before. If there's someone with me then I'll get them to have a look whilst I'm driving as that's more practical (don't want to waste time stopping). If I'm by myself, then I'll have a look before I set off, and remember the main roads that I need to aim for, and get a general picture in my head of the layout around where I'm aiming for.

Wow. Really? You all need to stop doing for a second and answer my thread please.

Okay, I'll elaborate on why I'm asking. I was seeing this guy recently. I have him the MBTI test right away. Understand often men will think that this is a test to pass in order to date me. So results can be a bit skewed. Okay back to story...

The guy tested as an ESTJ. I date lots of ESTJs and grew up with them. Some things started not to click. Eventually this guy told me he messed with the results a bit because he is older and didn't really want to talk about the way he used to be. Then he told me that he was a type of guy that had "to do something" in order to understand it. He needed to experience it first. I piped in and said "Yes, and this fact sometimes causes problems when someone who leads with sensing, doesn't understand why I don't want to date them. They aren't satisfied with my reasoning since its based on intuition. They want the concrete. So I often jump in and just go for it, let them 'experience' us until they figure out we don't work either."

I'm sure that was way too much relationship "blah blah" for him so he continued with, "I don't read manuals. I figure things out by doing them. I've always been this way. I'm a welder and this gets me in trouble with higher ups sometimes. But I don't read manuals and I've never liked text books, etc. But my solutions always work."

Now that was extremely odd to hear from any ESTJ. I've lived with ESTJs and my best friend is one. The way they want to slow down and read the instructions first almost drives me insane. I think this dude may have been ESTP.

Your responses to the OP are appreciated. Thank you.

no I don't have the attention span

I just figure it out myself, or let someone else read the manual.

I might quickly skim it to get the gist of the instructions if it's something that can't be changed. And I agree with Benzoate, I won't read for electronics, software, computers, etc.

Here's my idea, if there are other people around, I think the ESTJ will make it into a game, which gets interesting, especially if it doesn't work the first time. I believe my dad is an ESTJ.

I need the instructions, just to skim it over, but I like to do trial and error.

I like to have it around me if I come to a point where I would have to look at it just in case if Im not sure about something.
Its not like I don't like manuals because it's telling me what to do, it's that the manual serves a purpose of doing what is suppose to be right. Hope that makes sense.
And just like everyone else, I'll do a cursory glance and keep going I guess.
