^^ the crazyest ENTP thing by an INFP

My video card started having this glitch, lines appearing, shutting down, the visuals were all scrambled up and windows spat BSOD with 4 huge red lines, green waves and unreadable text.

Warranty was not available anymore on my Geforce 9800 ^^; so I baked it in the oven for 10 minutes at 386F roughly 200C without the cooling system and then reassembled it with thermo paste and all.

I was unsure and it was a big gamble :P mostly cus the oven doesn't show the correct degrees anymore.........XD but it worked!

The card is purring like a kitten :3, running at ideal temperatures just fine.

Whoa! I'm a computer tech and this just blows my mind. I've got to figure out why this worked.

I think the problem was with the video ram. The heat could have brought some minor connections together again or something along that line....at least that was my reasoning. Maybe I "melted" it together again.

If you try it, just keep in mind to cool the card down gradually. Don't take it out of the oven, just open the oven door a bit to let the heat escape and in 35 minutes it should be cool enough to put the cooler back on.

...oh and it will smell so open a window while doing this if you try it.

...and when putting it into the oven make sure to put aluminum foil into the pan and balance the card on some allu-foil-balls. it needs to be level and not touching the pan or anything except the foil balls.

I placed the card chip side down and cleaned the thermo paste off before inserting into the oven.

Well coming from an art major, I'm still WTFLOL.

What made you think that the connections were faulty?

Well the breakdown was sudden and the card didn't overheat (I was sure it wasn't overheating), plus it was working but in a very distorted way. When I pulled it from the system and went back to the built in card things seemed fine, plus the distortions were there in bios. That made me think "video ram issues" and I remembered baking video cards, looked it up again on youtube and decided to go for it. I had nothing to lose, as I said no warranty.

It was a crazy idea that just worked :P.

Seems so. I'm going to try it with this one spare motherboard I have today.

man! that's crazy!!! the best part is that it actually fixed things lol

200 degrees for 10 minutes!! and it works??? that just throws everything they've taught me about PCBs and chips right out of the window!

This is like the russian method of fixing things, if something don't work.... just give it a good kick, perhaps a few gunshots :P
