    Fake ENTPs

Has anyone else ever noticed the vast amount of fake ENTPs in the world? I'm not saying this to belittle anyone; what I mean is that many, many people claim to be or sometimes even test as an ENTP, but when you talk to them, you are certain there is no way it could be true. I have some friends who have tested as such, to which my (internal) reaction was, essentially, "Look, I know an ENTP when I see an ENTP - I am one, and you certainly are not!"

I understand that conceptions can be mistaken, of course, and perhaps these "fake" ENTPs could be telling the truth, but there's certainly something to be said for an outside, objective perspective on one's personality versus going off of one's own perception alone.

I know there are people on the forums, too, that are clearly not the personality type they claim to be. I'm sure this happens with all of the types, but (perhaps because I'm especially sensitive to my own type) I've noticed this phenomenon is especially prevalent for ENTPs. Why might this be? Is it that (this might be the ego talking) people want to be ENTPs, for whatever reason? To be honest, I wouldn't quite understand that. What reason could there possibly be?

I just find it all very odd...

    No True Scotsman

Also, what specifically are some of the characteristics of these supposed pseudo-ENTPs that makes you think they are not one?

Yes, that is your ego talking. If someone gives me genuine proof (showed me the results) that they took the MBTI test and came out ENTP, then they are an ENTP to me regardless of my own warped perceptions. It's a personality type. Not a clique.

I want to be an ENTP, but I'm quite fine being an INTJ, thankyou.

The friend to which I refer is, I believe, an ENTJ. ENTPs are generally very laid-back and tough to upset, but he becomes stressed out very easily. In addition, ENTPs tend to favor leaving the notecards at home and improvising; he, however, plans out everything, in ridiculous detail, before ever taking action. Naturally, when I saw that he tested as an ENTP, I was a bit puzzled.

P.S. - Ventolin, I actually think INTJs are pretty much the coolest. Like, ever. I love you guys and wish there were more of you - so don't even do so much as wish you were any other type!

    Mistakes along the way

I think that there are quite a few people who are mistyped for a while. I have not noticed more mistypings in ENTPs than other types - but I haven't been paying very close attention.

In my experience, when people are mistyped, it is not often because they intend to fool anyone, but either because:

    • they found it hard to assess their type, and this is the best guess that they have so far,
    • or they trusted an online test, and never dug into it any further.

It definitely does not help that the online tests many are using are not very good at all, and that the freely available descriptions online are very broad and general compared to the more detailed information available in copyrighted books.

We make many mistakes on our way to wherever it is we're headed, and I'm sure that as an ENTP with a ceaselessly exploring Ne, you can understand how that is so. Exploration requires mistakes.

There are four kinds of ENTPs. You can't know four sure if he's an ENTP like you or isn't, and I'd like to say that if you do that to him than how do you know he's not doing the same thing to you? How can you know that you're an ENTP for sure unless you've take the big expensive test?

This is completely off topic, but it did get me thinking.

Anyways, I think the most missed-typed type would be INFP. For some reason a lot of people just want to be the 'idealist' or the 'healer' or whatever else they have coined for INFPs. For instance there are probably a few hundred (at least) apparent INFPs on this site that are not in fact INFPs. Now rather or not that's of their own fault remains to be unseen, but regardless it's just something I've noticed and thought I would share.

    Moving onward...

I believe a lot of other ENTPs (Or NTs in general) would think I am not ENTP based on a) I seem much more introverted, b) I'm too much of a 'feeler,' c) I appear illogical, etc, etc.

I am under the understanding that A LOT of NTs believe that to 'feel' means you are a feeler and to 'think' and not 'feel' you're a thinker.

Well, folks! I'm here to tell you that that's bullshit.

    In a nut shell:

To be a feeler is to...

    • use subjective reasoning to make a decision

To be a thinker is to...

    • use objective criteria for your decision making

So while it may be true that a feeler might be more prone to being more emotional, it is by no reason how every feeler is. The same goes for thinkers as they are not always cold, detached and so on and so forth.

A lot of people that deem me as not an ENTP either don't know me or have talked to me once and base their entire assumption of me on that one little piece of information, which is a pretty shitty way of typing someone I must say.

To the original OP, who are you to say he is not ENTP? I realize you are his friend, but you don't exactly have liability to say he is another type without further investigation and other information to back you up (The J function is NOT all about organizing and planning in advance).

As for fake ENTPs, does it really matter if they're fake or not? If they're having a great time and we're having a great time then it's really just live and let live. The only time that I would either intervene or feel annoyed would be if it was very apparent that they were not ENTP (Through thorough tests and results, conversations with the subject, etc.) and they themselves were annoying.

That's about all I have to say about this.

I didn't think you were an INFP, So Long.

A lot of people have thought of me as INTJ, INTP, and ENTJ. (+ A lot have said ENTP). I always have to explain to them the functions. I wonder if he knows the functions. Most people only know that I'm an NT because I act more introverted, and can be judgmental (and authoritative).

However, I get my energy from being around people, and my Judgmental side is due to my argumentative abilities. Plus there is a lot more to J's than just judging.

:D However, I'm not on trial here. Actually, I believe in a past thread I was chosen as one of the poster boys for the ENTP type. Though I highly disagree with this because of my four ENTP theory. If you're going to choose people to reperesent a type choose one for each type of that type. I'm a Balance|NeTi| Really Low|FeSi| ENTP. I'm a more critical asshole one, aka I'd be a good poster boy for House type IRL.

While So Long So Long seems to go between Dr. Who and Trickster ENTP. While you wouldn't be a poster girl. You'd be a good show of an ENTP with Strong |NeFe| Medium |Ti| and Low |Si|.

I once took the cognitive functions test/ whatever its called and came as a ENTP. Took it again and came as a ENTP, i think something was wrong with the test. I have taken online tests 6 times came out as ENTJ, once as ESTJ and once lol as ENFJ.

    Whats going on here
