This is a discussion on ENTJ parenting? No matter what - I laughed within the ENTJ Forum - The Executives forums, part of the NT's Temperament Forum- The Intellects category; He isn't an ISTJ or ESTJ - ESTJ is one of my closer coworkers and I have an ISTJ wife. ...

He isn't an ISTJ or ESTJ - ESTJ is one of my closer coworkers and I have an ISTJ wife. They are even more rigid and strict than ENTJs. They wouldn't let that happen in the first place - or they would behead the kid as soon as they found out about it (they tend to have a zero tolerance policy).

I almost wanted to say ISTP tainted with a "I'm a rural man with a gun" type attitude. It could explain his interest in IT and guns which sound a bit more enthusiastic than the average person. ISTPs are generally more relaxed and his daughter may have taken advantage of the situation. And the gun thing could be his way of non-verbally communicating his anger.

As we've discussed before, you and I both have ISTJ SOs. I agree with you (based on my experience with Hubby) that VideoMan isn't an ISTJ. Like you, I think an ISTJ would have a more rigid set of rules set in place with clear consequences outlined ahead of time. Also, my husband wouldn't make a big public display of the rule violation. He would just take the laptop away with a "you-know-what-you-did---and-what-would-happen" comment. End of discussion.

I don't think that VideoMan is an NT or NF, or an SJ. That leaves the SPs.

I'm pretty good at understanding how the 8 intuitive types think and behave, and I've got a bit of a handle on SJs, but SPs are hard for me to wrap my head around.

    ISTP would make him Ti/Se.

Using Ti and Se, can you explain in what ways you see this in his thinking or behavior?

Not really - its a bit of a long shot. I don't know much about ISTPs myself, but I know they can be down to earth, fixated on details, have a preference for hands on and personal experience type activities (think mechanic), have a self-justified sense of logic (not universal objectivity), and have trouble expressing themselves.

I can see some of these traits in him: while irrational, logical in his own way with a bit of Se flair (enjoying the spontaneousness of shooting a laptop), his job is a network engineer (looked him up on LinkedIn), having issues saying what he is truly thinking/feeling, etc.

Te would have come right out and said, "get a job." Instead, he randomly and spontaneously picked up ONE application for his daughter. He probably was in the moment, saw it, figured some logic behind it, but didn't want to twist her arm about it.

I am also irritated by waste of resources. Check my mbti profile.

If he paid for the technology, he has every right to destroy it.

Personally, I'm in agreement with his decision. His daughter knew better and kept pushing the envelope. There are consequences for stupidity.

No one was disputing his right to destroy his own property. I personally find it illogical, given that he spent nearly 10 minutes moaning about how she took for granted the cost of juicing up her laptop.

Had I been her father, I'd have simply locked up her laptop in a safe until...

    a) she paid me the cost of it, adjusted for inflation
    b) she paid me my hourly wage for the time I spent working on it

    The results:
    1) she will not have a laptop for a while
    2) she will look for a job
    3) I will have a spare laptop in the meantime
    4) I won't waste $1 bullets, saving me $9

Actually, I disagree with punishing her for the FB thing. She wants to vent, so what? Who *hasn't* bitched to their friends about their parents as teens? She's 15 for fuck's sake.

Maybe the next time my wife posts something disrespectful about me on Facebook I'll burn down the house since I paid for it. Its my right and there are consequences to her stupidity. I have to be a good role model and let her know what is acceptable behavior, right?

PS: she has to pay me back for the matches and gasoline too.

This is so funny and true. Seriously If i'm going to make my child suffer the consequences of thier behavior then I'm going to do something useful as well. I'd give the laptop to a poor child, a teacher or another relative before I wasted 4 bullets destroying a tool someone else could use.

Not an ENTJ solution. At least not a sane ENTJ solution.
