I will admit: you're right in this case. If I was in the situation, I would probably lean toward your advice over my own. But there are many situations in which the balanced honest approach is necessary: especially when there are subordinates involved that need to see justice against a manager, which is the case in almost every managerial dispute.

You can't say: you're a great manager, because that alienates the trust you have built with those subordinates that have been slighted by the terrible manager.

None of that would sit well with me...I would be able to read right through all of that and it would SCREAM manipulation to me, because it IS manipulation. I don't like being manipulated. I would rather my boss just tell me straight up without insult or lies.

"________we want you to just focus on the floor right now; you excelled there. You have a great rapport with the employees under you, but we need someone really assertive in this position, and I know you have had a difficult time with that, as we've discussed in the past (assuming there were discussions and chances given for improvement before the demotion)".

So basically, don't tell me I suck and then BS me with compliments, and don't try to manipulate me into thinking I don't want to be a Manager. Just tell me what I did well, and what I didn't, along with what you're looking for. Explain all of this and make that the reason for my demotion, but compliment me on my abilities in the position I'd be returning to. That's honesty and I would respect that.

I'm sorry to hear about your job, but I'm glad you seem to be taking it well. Jobs that make you miserable are never worth it. Have you ever read the book Who Moved My Cheese? it's a great, easy read with a big message, I highly recommend it to anyone. It's geared towards business, but it also applies to many other aspects of life.

I wish you well on your journey and suggest you learn all about your personality and why you do some of the things you do. Self awareness is the best tool anyone can ever possess for self improvement and growth :)
thanks for the best wishes : ) I would most definitely read the book you suggested.

I'm 17 and a junior in high school. I just learned about these personality types and I have to say it made me feel better knowing that there are people like me out there and know how I feel. Anyways, I'm starting to realize in class that not everyone likes my honesty, especially my math teacher, who I find to me incompetent sometimes. I wasn't trying to seem mean or rude or anything but I pointed out a mistake in her Trig answer and she ran out crying... Is it that bad?

As long as she's not the type to hold a grudge I don't think it'll hurt too much. Although some of the other kids might hold it against you. Have you tried not making girls cry? :P

Nah, those creature and I have got into are little debates and fights but they never lasted long and sometimes ended with little tears shed on their part. I'm well liked, apparently a lot people admire my "honesty," but I'm okay with not being all that popular. I got a small group of girlfriends and I get along with guys well so I'm chummy.
I don't think my math teacher is one to hold a grudge, kind of a push over and bullied in class by the others. I just notice its an ongoing trend with myself that I don't see the emotional impact my words or the way I say have...

    emotionally handicap or what?

I've had troubles / run-ins with incompetent teachers myself. In grade 9, I had a History teacher fired for being incompetent - and before that in grade 8 played a huge role in getting a math teacher fired for hitting a student. I sort of turned the entire class against both the teachers and we rallied to get both of them fired.

Honestly, the way I think about it is if a teacher is too incompetent to teach/mentor students, then he/she's doing a dis-service to everyone. Just because someone has been hired as a teacher still doesn't make him/her competent/capable of having that label - they have to prove it.

    I say, good for you.

I was having run-ins with teachers till I graduated with my MBA in 2005. If I start counting, I think I had something like 4 major fights with teachers [one included being kicked out of class for telling her to let me discuss things with other students because the way she was explaining it didn't make any sense at all]. Once I walked out of a Sociology professor's class because he used the words "Islamic Terrorists" right after 9/11.

I've mellowed out since graduation. But I was always challenging teachers in classrooms.

Thank you and if you ask me, you seem to every right to do what you did too. And I know it isn't just me but in some classes, like my english class, my teacher hates when you tell your opinion and it contradicts her own and when you explain rationally they go on tangents on how theirs' is better because "they would know." Just cause teachers went to college and majored in the course doesn't mean their opinion is the only valid one. My school is definitely giving off the vibe of trying to conform people to a specific thought basis and they push you into by shutting down you opinions. I say hell no. I'm not sure how other high schools are because I've only been in one, but I can see an ongoing thread.

I have done a lot of walking out on teachers or starting major debates in class just cause I disagreed and ALL my respect goes to you for doing that too. I love when people speak out and say how they really feel. I always feel a certain respect for them than I do for others!

It sounds like you were just being a busy body in class. I can understand not agreeing with a teacher or even going to the principal about their credibility... But I really have a hard time believing YOU had them fired. Also it seems that if you have had multiple "problems" with teachers, even through college I would question whether they were the problem at all.
