    EXXJ character

When I create characters, I always try to figure out their MBTI type so that I can better understand their actions. However, one of my characters has been frustratingly elusive, type-wise. I've narrowed her type down to ENTJ, ESTJ, or ENFJ. The E and J are definite, but I'm unsure of the two middle functions. Here is her description. Please help me figure this out.

She works as an engineer on a steam engine. She is good at her job and enjoys doing it.
She is warm and friendly off work, but while working she has to make quick decisions based mostly on logic.
In her free time she likes going out with friends. When she isn't doing that, she likes doing number puzzles (this may be irrelevant, but maybe different types prefer different kinds of puzzles).
She's good at thinking on her feet.
She tends to mostly be concerned with the present problem, which is an S trait, but tries to improve on things that are already functional, which I've heard is an N trait.
She's married, and her husband is the ISFP brakeman on the same steam engine. They met at work.
She's a dog person. She and her husband own a German shepherd.

You could share more information about what she's doing, or acting while she's out with friends. Without going any deep, I'd say ENTJ, but you could add information to typical characteristics that could make her an ESTJ. She's doubtfully an ENFJ based on her use of logic.

I forgot to add that one of the main reasons she became an engineer is that her dad was one. Isn't emulating people one admires an ENFJ trait?

She's an estj, but she's interested in improving the system not because she's an nt, but because she's really motivated to succeed because she emulates her father.

Nope ;) And trust me, ENFJs can be logical. Remember that F is a rational function as well ;)

As for me, I totally got the ESTJ feel of the woman described. Reminds me a lot all the ESTJs I know.

Need more detail about how she thinks/acts and her desires/motivations really.

Wouldn't this be easier to do the other way around? - Figure out what type you want the characters to be, and then write the character development and plot in a way that would be predictable based on their type, rather than trying to backpedal and make random things make sense?

Unfortunately, writing is rarely an efficient process. Especially creative writing.

.. I'm getting a 'competent ESFJ' vibe. Competent in the sense that she does her job well (so good with decisions and knowing what option to take) and seek to improve (because of an ideal/ to improve the wellness of other people? Which is a Fe trait). Being an F doesn't mean you don't/can't decide based on logic, especially when it's a job and you actually know what you're doing.

Easy question: does she function as a mother/ matriarch figure for her surroundings? That's usually an indication of Fe.
