Do you work better in structured environments?

When left to my own devices I don't get much done. However in an environment like school and work, where there are deadlines to meet I get a lot done. It's damn hard work! But I actually feel like I've managed to accomplish something when I meet the deadlines.

I think this is why I love school so much. I love University even more because whilst it is, structured there is also enough freedom for me to approach a subject how I want to. I feel so much better when I have a goal to work towards, a goal set by someone else. I will stick to it when it's a goal someone else has set for me.

Yet as soon as I'm home again left to my own devices I got back to being a complete mess only doing things when I feel like it. I think this is one of the reasons why working freelance is going to be difficult for me!!

What about you? Do you work better in a structured environment?

EDIT: Sorry! I don't think I explained myself very well. What I'm trying to say is that when left to my own devices a project I'm working on will continue for ever and ever, never getting completed. However at school because of the deadlines I actuall manage to get my work done. I FINISH stuff and this is a good feeling.

However...just because there is a deadline doesn't mean I get my work started early. I don't! I keep putting it off, and off and off, pushing the deadline to the back of my mind before I realise that I absolutely have to start my work. And it's horrible, and incredibly stressful and I freak out and I make myself ill...but...I get stuff done. So that's the point I'm trying to make that I actually complete things because I HAVE to...it's a kick up the backside that I need and I appreciate it, even though I hate it.

I don't do well with a lot of structure, but I don't do well with no structure either.

I need something in the middle.

With too much structure, I freak out, withdraw, and basically shut down. I feel like I've lost my sense of control and freedom, and without that I don't know how to function well.

Without any structure, I have no focus and could just go forever without doing anything worthwhile. Without any structure, I am at the mercy of those bursts and dry patches of inspiration. I need some structure to keep me going even through the dry patches and to temper some of the abandon with which I throw myself into projects during those bursts.

@katienicole - Thank you for typing my response for me. You got it exactly right! This saved me a lot of time, so please let me know if I can do anything for you in the future. I definitely owe you one! :D

^ What those two said. if I am by myself hardly anything will be done. If I am under constant supervision I will be stressed and hardly anything will get done. If I am somewhere in the middle with elements of both settings involved shit will be done.

Like I framed canvas, enough space that I can let my imagination flourish but boundaries so I don't get lost in myself.

I'm with them. It's really weird because I was never able to explain it to my friends. They just never understood.

lol was about to complete disagree until the way you said that When someone else forces you (work or uni) you will meet the deadlines... Since I hate getting stressed (i get the same symptoms and im completely useless lol) I start my assignments as early as possible! Although every time i do, I like to find the evidence as i write and cant stick to a plan I created earlier!

So what I am trying to say @umbrellasky in alot of words... Is that I completely agree with you! :P

    I can't have TOO much structure & I can't not have any
structure at all. Flexibility of some sort works well. Too much
restriction or routine would kill ANY Enfp.

    @The Sundancer, said beautifully...and agreed with 100%!!
I'm the same...too much order rules and structure get the worse outta me, I get frustrated and it's like I can't match up to the expected level also makes me feel dumb....and without it I'm a free soul, I wud be able to do everything yet nothing would be done....a bit of both is important...

    ^ agree with u...routine depresses me :(
