    Animal Simile and Metaphor

A good ENFP buddy of mine likens herself and others to approximately 7 mammals, 4 reptiles, 3 birds and 1 fish per hour. Most recently she said I look "all lizzardy", said she "felt like a bird" (because of the way she was positioned), and told our mutual friend she was a "puppy".

Do you find you tend to compare people and things to animals in this way? What sort of creative comparisons have you made lately?

Well, I have been compared to a penguin because, and I quote - "you travel a long way to have sex"...my friend was referring to me being in a long distance relationship at the time.

I have also gotten my "moose" on when I have a burning desire to hike and wander my myself in the woods and commute with nature.

I've been told I'm cute like a kitten.... "You're so cute when you're frustrated. You look like a kitten!" I'm at this point ready to punch an infant and kick a puppy (at the same time), so I responded with, "Yeah, well, I'm about to get downright adorable. Kind of like a tiger killing her prey..." I said this to an INTJ friend of mine, and he backed up because he's actually never seen me so ferocious at anything.

I've also often been told by my room mates I remind them of a goldfish on crack. o.o"

I compare myself and everyone to just about nearly everything. I've done animals, musical instruments, weather, trees, seasons, dishes, parts of speech, planets, key signatures, colours, artistic movements, flowers, classroom tools, school subjects... and I'm sure the list is longer.

I... don't think this is just an ENFP thing, though. My friends and I do things like that all the time. And one friend is an ISFP and another is an ESFJ. (I don't think it's a Feeler thing either, since my older sister has been known to do that with me as well, and she's an INTJ.)

Pffft, of course we come up with the silliest comparisons ever. If not the Ne-doms, then who? :P

Sometimes i think my friends look like animals/have certain animal characteristics. I have 1 friend that sleeps alot and is seemingly slow and dim-witted
I would consider him a sloth.
btw josh, the lizard description kind of fits actually.

i've had a couple gf's of mine compare me to a big ol' huggable bear for some reason.

Thats great! Thats what I love about my pal. She makes these effortlessly figurative and poetic connections... Except I don't think she even realizes what a big deal it is! She just does her thing.

Could it be you've inspired others to imitate your skill? Or are you convinced they come by it just as naturally?

    Exactly what I was thinking.

Thank you, Isaac, for disclosing my real name. And the lizzardiness was after I had a scotch or two... she was describing the look in my eyes. Mmm.... scotch. I think I'll have one now.

Pffft.... while your pal may be poetic, I think I'm anything far from irl. When I make the connections, it's just sort of... "You know, I think I'm more of a noun than a verb. Not to say I don't do anything; I do a lot. But I always come back to the center of a state of being. Now so-and-so! They're more verb-y. They do things and they shape sentences and they take us places." (Unfortunately I talk with my hands, so you have to imagine extravagant body language to help communicate a point that didn't need help in the first place.)

Maybe it's just that my friends take my weird comparisons in stride. I dunno.

But I do think that there are some metaphors/similes/comparisons that are universal. Animals is probably one of them. Weather and seasons may be another. Probably not dishes, parts of speech, etc. though.

I've called my boyfriend a constipated smurf.

    I rest my case.

I may just be assuming that such high volume of figurative language entails a gift in poetry, as at some point some really amazing words will be combined to create something remarkable... The examples I gave at the outset aren't her best work... She also came up with this line about the way the dust on the piano feels when she touches the keys. I told her she should put that in a poem because it was a beautiful symbolism. She replied with, "but symbolic of what??" I loled and then told her a few different things it could mean, depending on the context of the poem. She'd had no idea.

Actually I may be projecting this ability onto the whole type based on my experience with her, because I have an ENFP sister and know a couple others irl that don't necessarily use as much clever figurative speech. But the gift is consistent with Ne powers as noted earlier, so it's probably a latent talent all ENFPs have if its not expressed.

I agree that animals and other aspects of nature have universal symbolic meaning. INFJs have a "symbolic inner world", and it makes me interpret the natural world as being deeply expressive.
