    - american pop music? not generally. it's too accommodating, false humble and lacking in backbone.
    - exception: rap. rappers are cocky, get lots of sex, have lots of money and do whatever the hell they want. that's my kind of music hahaha
    - exception 2: Madonna =P
    - I also like eurodance, it has a sexual, almost mystical quality to it and it's great to dance to, whether by yourself or with others
my favorite type of music though is opera (yes, I'm kind of an opera snob, so I'll try not to talk your ear off lol) opera is just so powerful and dramatic, but at the same elegant and simultaneously masculine and feminine. as a whole, I like the more heroic, dramatic operas than the more emo ones (yes, opera can get pretty emo sometimes lol)
    - as a whole, most types of rock (classic rock, screamo, alternative, hard rock...you name it) grate on my ears and sound unpleasant to me, with a few notable exceptions like (old) Nightwish and various symphonic metal bands

Edit: oh, I forgot Frank Sinatra! he's the man! =P

I listen to a little mainstream. Mostly electronic: trance, techno, dub-step, drum & bass, euro-dance etc.

No, I was referring to pop, rock, r&b when I was talking about mainstream. Sorry for the confusion.

Hell no!! You lost me at the word "mainstream". I tend to stay in touch with contemprary music by way of the net, preferring alternative rock. I also have a wide collection spanning the decades of the 50s to the present - mostly rock, though I like some techno, classical, blues, and even a touch of country or Christian now and then. I find mainstream music lacking in substance - always have. It's as if those artists simply cannot think outside of the box or take a risk to save their life. Maybe such is how the game is stil played if you want air time (the Nashville machine comes to mind), who knows? I am just REAL thankful for mp3s, Pandora, satellite radio and the like.

I 100% agree!!! King of Dreams, my friend, you must have different music stations where you live than where I ever have! (lucky)

Alternative rock for me. Mainstream seems to all sound exactly the same. It feels more like competition, who can have their songs at the top of the charts the longest. I do like all sorts of music thou. 50's, 60, 70, 80's. Jazz, Mozzart, blues. Classical music is what i play when cleaning , baking and writing. All my friends IRL are into rock like i am. My husband is quite grungy, as am I. I don't like punk rock thou, or anything heavy metal. The music has to make sense in or for me to listen to it. I wouldn't buy anything from the charts today, although i have downloaded some in my Ipod, mostly because its upbeat and keeps me motivated for jogging and working out. Alternative rock is my first choice of music. I find these rock bands to be much more creative than lets say " Britney Spears" Gags*

No, I was echoing the sentiment of YOUR reply to King of Dreams, saying what he listed was not mainstream. Sorry to confuse (such is not unusual for me, sadly).

I like music for its own sake....it doesn't matter as much to me who sings it or if it's mainstream as long as I like the song. :)
