How ambitious are you, guys ?

To ENFJs : Are you ambitious ? Is it important to you to succeed in life ? To move forward with your professionnal life ? How hard-working, tenacious are you all ?

Or is it rather an ENTJ thing ?

I definitely see a lot of ambition in the ENFJs I know. Their focuses are likely to be different from ENTJs, on a large-scale level, but on a small-scale, they're just as ambitious.

For example, the ENTJ I knew was really ambitious in basketball, and the ENFJs to get to Stanford, on a large-scale. On a smaller scale, they all were very driven to do well in their schoolwork - but again, though, in order to reach their large-scale goal.

I think the visions of the ENxJs produced by Ni topped by are the source of their perfectionistic hard work. How much they believe in that vision will determine how hard they're willing to work toward it - which, most of the time, is pretty damn hard.

It is important to me to succeed in life but in the sense that I've impacted in others in a positive way. Sure, I want to have a successful career and live comfortably but I truly wouldn't feel that I have succeeded in life If I haven't made a difference to someone or possibly many other people's lives.

Hey @Callie :) Nice to see you around these parts. It's been ages since we last talked. How've you been?

For me when I was younger and not broken down physically and mentally, I was extremely ambitious from the start [but I can't speak for other ENFJ's] ... however, I personally had over-arching dreams of becoming a world famous movie Music Composer in the same vein as Hans Zimmer, Trevor Rabin etc. Heck, there was a time when I wanted to be like Enigma, Yanni and A. R. Rehman as well. However, at the same time, all I really wanted in life was comfort and a sense of security where I would be able to please everyone including my family and spouse and if that meant sacrificing my dreams [which I did], then I was perfectly ok with it as well.

My dreams then switched from becoming a musician to becoming a top Marketing Director of some multi-national corporation [mainly had my sights set on Uni-Lever / PNG level organizations] so I set out to do my MBA - but then I had an accident which has stunted my career and ambitions greatly. I managed to peak as a Marketing Manager followed by Business Development Manager, but my knee kept deteriorating so I had to re-examine my ambitions.

My latest watered down ambition is to get into a regular desk job / call centre job while I continue to look for Entrepreneurial options. Currently my business plans are mostly secret. I have very little start-up capital at the moment, but I am mentally working on my 7th business plan [I've written business plans for Pool Halls, Gaming Cafes, Web-sites etc - but those required more capital than I was able to get].

My main desire in life now is to re-settle, get a decent job, get my own home and eventually get married, have children, raise them and die of old age without any regrets.

Well, I consider myself to have pretty high expectations of myself and what I intend to achieve. Yeah, I consider myself pretty ambitious compared to most people. Could be what also drives me hardest, to achieve some of these personal goals.

    In chronological order:

As a child: Driven to the best at all sports. Was the only girl on the football team in grade school. Was incredibly athletic and beat the boys in all sports. Was academically at the top of my class. Wanted to be the best at everything. Very popular.

Ages 10-13: New school. Due to circumstances, could not become very friendly with others. Isolation made me withdraw and gave me less energy with which to be ambitious. Grades were As and Bs.

Ages 14-15: All honors classes. Top score in every class. In every sport available. Winning all awards. Had rich social network. Felt like I was on top of the world. Had HUGE ambitions/goals for my future.

Ages 15-16: Medical issue. Home-schooled for 2 years. All ‘friends’ ignored me b/c I wasn’t at school. Completely forgotten and isolated. Lonely. No energy with which to be ambitious.

Ages 16-18: Back in school. Hard to fit in. Made some friends at 17/18. More friends = more energy = more hope and sense of control to impact my future = a little more ambition.

College: New start. Tons of ambition. Waited tables and bartended to pay my own way through school. On Dean’s List. Wanted to make something of myself. Worked myself far too hard at the detriment of my social life – yet the social aspect of work and school made it all balance out.

Career (first 10 years): Insanely ambitious. Worked 70 hours per week. Little to no social life. Felt severe imbalance. Achieved status at work that most people either never achieve, or if they do, they are 20+ years older. Problem: it all came at a cost. No social network. Never stopped to understand myself. Thought I was an ENTJ and my feelings were simply a result of being overworked.

Turning point: Medical crisis made me realize that had I died at that moment I would have not accomplished what I wanted. It all would have been a waste. Although having achieved a lot at work, I had not truly touched anyone’s heart nor made their life better (except for my employees who loved me and those positively impacted by the nature of the work). While my work ethic was extraordinarily high, had I continued on that path my life would have been shortened by 20-30 years. How many less people would I impact because of an early death? Change was necessary. This crisis was indeed a blessing in disguise.

Now: Spent the last few months studying psychology, understanding myself, and building my social network. Now I’m very ambitious to positively impact others personally and truly enjoy life. Every day is filled with planning, strategizing and dreaming of how to live a long happy, healthy, and fulfilling life and to make other’s lives around me equally as rewarding.

In short: Still very ambitious and will be as long as surrounded by friends. Ambitions have changed in scope through the years.

If by ambitious you mean wanting to enjoy life, live comfortably, love people, and change the world for the better... then yes—I'm ambitious.
