I think there are enough stories of immortality gone wrong (not being immune to aging, for example), that I would be leery of it. Too many variables.
I find the idea of life extension for certain members of our species in the midst of millions of others starving to death every year appalling. Maybe if we could learn to distribute our resources more equitably and enter a age in which no one dies from preventable causes, i would entertain the idea.
Ultimately it does seem like a curse. Perhaps some minds though would volunteer to stay around for a while longer. I'm thinking of certifiable once-in-a-generation geniuses. It would benefit the species tremendously if they hung out a little longer.
Really, immortality is essentially impossible. Extending life is one thing, but eventually something is going to happen to cause you to die beyond repair. Personally I am in high support for it. But really I tend to be in high support for most things scientific, and my own selfishness tends to make me want it greatly as well. There will be issues we will need to solve in terms of economics, politics, ethics, and population, but I don't think this means that we shouldn't continue our pursuit.
I think that, should it be possible, immortality should be a reward for those who have done the most good to this world. It also shouldn't be permanent.
EDIT: wow, I'm aware. didn't notice you were the one who started this thread lol
I don't want immortality. Life is to stressful, trying to live and strive for something is wonderful but man...I am tired! I don't wanna be here forever. I look forward to the day when everything is said and done and I am free from this earthly life. Every day is like ground hog's day. Ever seen that movie? No thanks, one day I will be checking out of here...wherever, whenever, or however it will be. I will embrace it.
I'm quite sure anyone here who will be alive in 2040 will become (biologically) immortal.
I do think life, in general, is preferable to death - thus I prefer immortality above mortality.
And the demographic transition is very important. In the last centuries, both mortality and natality rates have decreased with 75% - we can manage the last 25%.
IMO immortality is more of a curse, I certaintly don't want to be alive forever watching everyone I care about die.
I think its will be both a curse and a gift curse in a way that your loved ones will die in front of you while you live on and gift because think of all the things you can do all the knowledge you can acquire all the mysteries you can unravel because time will not be a factor any more .
It would suck tremendously to watch everyone you love die, but thing is, you already are, depending on how old you get. So it really would not be any different than what it is now, save for that you'd watch some more people die than you have to today.
I'd do anything for it, but yeah, it's all theory anyway, sadly.
