Is leadership key to the progress of civilization?

Leadership has been described as the “process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”..

Our society is built on the age old tradition of leadership..People look up to their leaders to take care of them(interests)...this model has been a success for most part...people goes to great lengths, even to sacrifice individual rights/liberties to uphold this model..There are so many examples of successful leadership throughout the history which hides many facts just to cling to this model...I am thinking about the most general political/military/economic leadership ... Is it possible for the society to run without leaders? an alternate model to leadership?

Quite the contrary. I'd say that the abolition of hierarchy would get us a lot further and allow each individual to reach its full potential. We need to break out of the illusion that we need (a) leader(s) to decide for us.
    Paragon thanked this post.

I understand hierarchy may cause the loss of independence of thought and action for individuals...but what kind of models other than leadership hierarchy will make the society run...I am aware of the philosophies like anarchism but is it general enough to be applicable to replace social/political/economic hierarchies?

Also what does you avatar mean/imply?

I would say so, yes. There are many theories of how a non-hierarchial society would look and work. Anarchists are under no delusion that abolishing the state automatically would solve all problems - organisation is always needed, but it can be done without hierarchy.

My avatar is a picture that was removed from one of my favourite video games (Fallout) and was supposed to serve as an icon for the perk "Child Killer." I found it entertaining when someone shooped the word "society" onto her belly and adopted it as my avatar.

Imagine a board room of a giant corporation. Is there only one leader in that room? Although there is a titular head (president?), it is actually a committee which chooses the courses of action for the company. It is committees of chosen (no volunteers) leaders that should be in charge of our governments/resources.

This is a hard question...because people with good intentions tend to start out in the right direction, then become corrupt, and end up screwing and real progress that was made. Even if they do manage to remain true and good for their entire reign, they will eventually die and somewhere along the line a corrupt leader/party will take power.
Long story short: Power leads to corruption. Corruption leads to downfall. Downfall leads to re-birth.
