This is a discussion on Republic or Monarchy ? within the The Debate Forum forums, part of the Topics of Interest category; I think a republic with only 1 house of decisions would be ideal... Like the US don't need both congress ...

    I think a republic with only 1 house of decisions would be ideal... Like the US don't need both congress and senate, that's silly. A monarchy is very symbolic, but yes, it uses a lot of money. In my opinion they should not get loads of money from taxpayers. Instead make them work, and have the king get something average, for the things he attends around country.

    The House and the Senate are ment to balance each other. That way a state like Texas gets the same say as RI, but it also gets more State reps.

    In the US, senators were intended to be elected by a state's legislature and representatives were to be elected by the people of a state. This would allow representation of the people and representation of the state government in the Congress.

    In 1913, the 17th amendment changed this structure to require the people of a state to directly elect senators as well. This eroded the strength of the states.
