No one believes universal health care would reduce costs. Obviously having less people on health care is cheaper.
The debate is all about reform.
Democrats want greater government regulation of health insurance companies.
Republicans want tout reform, the ability of judges to throw out frivolous lawsuits, thus resulting in health insurance companies paying less on legal fees resulting in lower costs. They also want health insurance companies to be able to compete across state lines, and undercover agents to investigate hospitals and their patient care.
Republicans, however, feel the bill the dems have proposed would cost too much, and add too much to the deficiet, whereas the dems argue it is deficit neutral. In reality no one really knows how much it will cost.
The smart thing for the president to do is to take some of the republican ideas to be able to pass the legislation through.
That's basically the gist of the whole debate right there.
This isn't going to end well.
I think you're mistaken. The dems aern't trying to pass universal healthcare, that died last year, the ongoing debate is on how to proceed to reform Healthcare.(see above post)
The reason the dems have dropped the public option was because it was too unpopular. A government run healthcare system can out compete any other because it doesn't need to rely on profits, it can just keep tossing money down the drain, thus eventually leading to the death of the other companies.
Anyways there is currently no healthcare debate on the national level on whether their should be universal healthcare, the dems already lost that debate. The debate is on how to reform the current system to operate better and make it more affordable.
