Yes that was an incredibly stupid, selfish and dangerous thing to do. Hate though when people say things like 'what a moron' when they don't know if there is more to the story apparently he was suffering from anxieties and depression so in a moment of impulsivity and without really thinking perhaps he was driven to do it in order to get home. Not saying I agree with it at all though, just feel a bit of sympathy for him if this is the case and don't think he would deserve life imprisonment.

That's true to a certain extent. However, with declining revenues, excessive military spending and an increasingly unaffordable national debt, that puts the US on the road to decline, like the roman empire.
