    Religion, not faith, fact

That's how it appears to me anyway. A friend and I, both of us agnostic, had a long discussion with a friend once who was very religious, and we were arguing that the existence of god cannot be proven, therefore, logically, both sides should be able to be wrong about whether god exists. The christian friend however, argued 'I know that God exists' whereby it becomes a fact, not faith. Thus religion in my opinion should not be called faith, rather factism.

Well the way your friend approached it seems rather obtuse..

One definition of faith though is:
Mental acceptance of and confidence in a claim as truth without proof supporting the claim.

So he seems to be rather rigid in his ways..

Was a she, was extremely rigid, very nice, but kind of stopped paying attention to her after a discussion on the animal nature of humans, when she said that a banana was closer genetically to the human than chimps were, and had got this information from a 'reliable' source.

*Loudly cringes* I know how that one goes.. Three of my flatmated in Uni were members of the Christian Union.. I had frequent discussions with them. They would dismiss my facts in discussion, then misuse them later. When people came to me with their complaints.. I would revise the argument in it's appropriate context. So not only did they not think for themselves, but they dramatically abused valid information for a quick-fix (when they could not argue for themselves).

On the other hand, we share 90-98% of DNA with chimpanzees. So, Mercury's friend is still wrong.
